Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

If it’s friendship, that’s fine by me. But I hear “dating with intent” so often that it makes me not even bother to reach out in any capacity most of the time. So I feel obligated to put myself in a headspace of considering someone as a potential partner and all of the vulnerabilities that include.

It’s why I been saying I just want to find somebody I can go out to eat with, catch a movie, or check out a new spot or show from time to time, and whatever comes out of that will be what it’s gonna be.
