UPDATE: I saw it happen! At the Birds Canada research station at the tip of Long Point I watched an expert ever-so-gently and carefully put one of these tiny tags on a monarch. Let me walk you through the steps (1/4)

So cool to visit the Motus workshop at Birds Canada headquarters. The Motus community is studying the movement of birds, bats and insects. This tiny radio telemetry device will fit on a Monarch butterfly 😲 #invertebrates #birds 🌿 www.birdscanada.org/bird-science...
Brown wood-sided building with a wi Dow and a door. Sign above the door says, “Motus Workshop and Research Laboratory”. Tiny antenna with a rectangular box on the end. The whole thing is on an open hand and is about 5cm long. Orange and black butterfly on purple flowers.

i love this part and i think it very much shows the difference in depth of thinking between someone like Klein, desperately fighting in the here-and-now and arguing to win a battle with compromise, versus Coates' position that he is a soldier in a long war.

I’m pretty much constantly angry about how the global media ecosystem supercharged the current wave of fascism and of course I can’t help but think of Al Swearengen talking about the telegraph coming to Deadwood
Al: Invisible messages from invisible sources, or what some people think of as progress.
Dan: Ain't the heathens used smoke signals all through recorded history?
Al: How's that a fucking recommendation?
Dan: Well, it seems to me like, you know, letters posted one person to another is just a slower version of the same idea.
Al: When's the last time you got a fucking letter from a stranger?
Dan: Bad news about Pa.
Al: Bad news! Or tries against our interests is our sole communications from strangers, so by all means, let's plant poles all across the country, festoon the cocksucker with wires to hurry the sorry word and blinker our judgments of motive, huh?
Dan: You've given it more thought than me.
Al: Ain't the state of things cloudy enough? Don't we face enough fucking imponderables?
Dan: Well, by God, you give the word, Al, and them poles will be kindling.

Kinda frivolous, but I need help!

GenXer, getting married in December. (YAY!) No idea what to wear. (BOO!) Internet scouring's been upsetting. (KA-CHING!) In-person shopping has been deflating. (SOB!) Been looking at new and resale and... nothing.

Suggestions? (I'm in Canada. Nothing from the US.)

I can’t get the post to load via link, but the observation below by @calvinrestov.bsky.social is very insightful and feels true:

tend to disagree. I don't think it's a case of they only have to get lucky once, or we have to be lucky every time, I think every failed attempt makes it harder for them to make it "stick", precisely because they are the ones addicted to outrage, and getting more numb to even the worst tragedies.

I do take comfort from the apparent lack of stickiness of the regime's efforts in this regard, but I also feel apprehensive because something will likely stick eventually if you throw enough inflammatory spaghetti at the wall.

I can't stress this enough to folks who are maybe thinking about running for office, or who want to step up in some other way, but who are worried they're just not up to the responsibility:

you totally. No one running things has got anything on you except connections. Go for it.

Great thread from Bret, as usual

I re-read Letter from a Birmingham Jail the other day and I was struck by just how stunningly brilliant it was not just in writing but strategic thinking.

Like, not news, it's a modern classic for a reason.

It's just a remarkably clear vision of a strategy to achieve change.

the funny thing about the constant misappropriation of MLK is that the guy left a massive body of writing specifically aimed at explaining his views of those of the movement he represented to the broad public. it is extremely easy to know what the guy thought on a variety of subjects and yet

Despite everything that happened this week, it has been another one full of mountain bluebirds here.
#yql #Alberta #birds #birding #wildlife 🪶🇨🇦
A songbird with a bright blue back, wings and head and grey-blue chest is perched atop a fencepost. He has his head cocked to one side giving him a quizzical look. The background is a blurred light brown from all of the dried grass in the field.

I started to walk down towards where the bats were and I said no brett, you're staying the course. Several minutes later, I got this.

Right behind me.

Success!

More videos and stills later once I get back to my laptop.
