"Baltimore's Crime Numbers Game," a three-part, two-year, ~14k word look at Baltimore crime data and Baltimore police corruption history from 1990-2024 now has a landing page. Very proud of this project: therealnews.com/baltimores-c...
Baltimore's Crime Numbers Game: A Three-Part Series
A three-part series on the past 30-plus years of rising crime and rising police budgets.

The way for politics to work for those currently running and striving to not to be a ghoul is fortunately, the normal, simple way to respond: "I don't believe what I said/did then, I was a dumbass" or "I do still believe this, here is why" and then people make a decision about you! It's very easy.

One last thing: the idea that nostalgia is what makes people think fondly of video stores is misplaced. Rarely do people come in for the "video store feel" (which we don't really have anyway). It's usually as a response to a fractured, expensive, and inconsistent digital marketplace.

Setting aside the thorny falsehood of "unprecedented media abundance," working at a video store for the past five years has introduced me to countless new movies, experiences, and people (many I now consider friends). I'll take the communal experience over any digital landscape no matter the scope.
Someone doesn’t remember how badly going to a video store sucked, and just generally how much worse things were in the 90s-2000s. Oh, it doesn’t work perfectly? Sometimes they just didn’t have the thing you wanted. We live in an era of unprecedented media abundance and it’s has spoiled us rotten.
I would laugh if this wasn't so true 😭
This country has incoherent policy when it comes to drugs and when it comes to guns and the result is certain, seemingly random groups of people can use drugs or possess guns while others go to prison for 5-10. It's not sustainable and now much of it is up to a very compromised Supreme Court
Once cannabis became accepted as medicine in the mainstream while Democrats failed to legalize on the federal level for years and years, it was inevitable that we would arrive at this somewhat ad hoc approach to guns and drugs and rights
people who use drugs ("habitually" or not) should be able to own a gun and cannabis users ("habitual or not) in particular already do "legally" possess guns and are encouraged to lie by just about everybody throughout the process to obtain a gun.

to this i would add a good amount of self-loathing stemming from a belief that liberal political views are somehow “inauthentic” or an affectation of “elites”
I agree with whoever said a rather under-appreciated dynamic is the extent to which Professional Politics Opinion Havers flat out just find the left interpersonally irritating in a way they do not find the right so, and I think a lot of the talk of a vibe shift was wish-casting their irritants away.

I miss McKeldin Fountain, he really loved this kind of weather.

I am so disappointed by the lack lackluster critical reception to this movie. Yes, I know, it was probably poorly marketed, but it's our job to see past that.
i wrote about The Smashing Machine, which is not a sports movie but a sobriety movie

2. Rolling Stone is owned by a large media conglomerate, which is ending remote work across its brands.

My home is Portland, Oregon, ~1,000 miles from the nearest office, so this marks the end of the line for me at RS.
The people in charge violate decorum which older folks hold dear and specific people in the admin remind them of their shithead son in law or the smarmy prick they are on the phone with who's fucking up their healthcare and they all think the president is a big dumb idiot. It is very very simple.
I spend ~two hours a day every day talking to people between the ages of 75-95 and they are all, regardless of their overarching politics, atomically angry about what is happening and have very unique and specific thoughts about what they would like to happen to "the bastards in charge" as one said
look i was recently talking to a septuagenarian life long dem (who shall remain nameless) and generic lib, and she was like “i just think there should be firing squads and they should sell tickets.”

I just wanted to plug one of the best book deals around. For a mere $7.50, you can get the best collection of Kenneth Fearing's poems around, edited by Robert Polito, who wrote Jim Thompson's biography, so the man knows his noir lit.

SCOOP: Trump Fabricates Story of Hand-to-Hand Combat Between Troops and Child Gangsters in D.C.

Trump’s claim that National Guard members beat child gang members on the streets of Washington was disputed even by the military.

the correct response to scaremongering about trans kids in sports is:
1) kids should be able to play sports with their friends
2) you want the government inspecting yr kid’s genitals? asking for chromosome and hormone tests? seems messed up!
3) sports governing bodies also already figured this out

Baltimore is 60 percent Black. It’s also a city with a deep bench of journalistic talent and a deep history of high quality journalism outlets. Doesn’t the Banner’s audience deserve more than a white lady carpetbagger? Or are journalism jobs merely the purview of a mobile white elite?
I of course got to Psychomania through.... Electric Wizard

And hell yeah, that book is so good; a few especially wild moments are very Sean coded for sure
