It also meant learning *about* things: literature, philosophy, history, art, mathematics, astronomy…ye olde pursuit of knowledge. It wasn’t just skills acquisition (though that’s an inseparable part). Learning was itself a value.
For hundreds of years, higher education meant learning how to communicate and think critically, necessary ingredients for a free society.

I’ve sometimes fallen into the trap of thinking that complementing a creative person for their work is less sophisticated or desired than discussion or debate about it but very often the best thing you can say to them is hell yeah and that doesn’t make you dumb it just makes you nice
