Halloween Parade

#art by American author & illustrator Phoebe Wahl
A colorful illustration showing a parade of costumed and masked figures going through a nighttime forest. There is a little skeleton and a little devil, a butterfly, a woman with her baby dressed up as witches, a person costumed as a yellow flower, an animal carrying a pumpkin lantern (I’m not sure what it is, maybe a fox? It’s very cute) and a girl with a pink crown carrying a golden star.

Remains of a medieval building on the banks of Minster Pool, Lichfield.

Its exact purpose is a bit of a mystery and that chap carved into stone is keeping schtum about who, or what, he’s peering at through the arch.

Enjoyed the New Yorker interview with Tim Curry, a free-wheeling conversation in which there were several sensitive questions about his paralyzing stroke. But oh my goodness, why was there no follow-up at all to this staggering answer? www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
Screenshot of text from the interview:

You’ve always been an incredibly physical performer: your strut during “Sweet Transvestite” in “Rocky Horror,” or the way you run around unfurling the mystery at the end of “Clue.” Do you still feel that in your body? Does that live somewhere in you still?

I think it does, but it’s angry. My mobility is angry to get out. But it’s not happened yet. I do a certain amount of physical therapy. I did a whole bunch of it at Cedars-Sinai, and I got very close, I think, to walking. That was tantalizing. For insurance reasons, I had to withdraw. And I have a visiting physical therapist now, but I can only really do exercises from my bed, which is pretty pathetic. It’s not going to get me walking, I don’t believe.

[I have underlined the sentence "For insurance reasons, I had to withdraw."]

With this degree of radicalism in place now, with so much damage to the republic we once knew already done and ongoing, public servants who come to power after it all might need to rebuild a whole new ship of state.

Not restoration so much as renewal.

It's an open question as to whether the current slide into autocracy is permanent.

If not permanent, what would the now-conservative party do with power regained? Try to repair everything?

I'm not sure it can be done.

My friend Sascha is a professional musician and he's lost a viola bow on the way to Heathrow. Please signal boost to help him get it back.
Lost viola bow on the way from Honor Oak Station to Heathrow Terminal 2. The bow slid from its bow case somewhere along the way, possibly on the train. TFL contacted already.
It weighs 68.2 grams and has got a stamped DODD next to the frog. If any info on this, please pm me.

A decade into this aberrant era, there's only one party left bound by the norms and values of the postwar liberal order, by rule of law, by the constitution, etc. Consequently, that party (Democrats) are the...conservatives now.

An obvious point, but maybe so much so it's hiding in plain sight?

$9 a day daycare? Year of paid maternity leave? Free medical care? Wow.

My health insurance rates are about to go up a bunch. Paid a FORTUNE for childcare back in the day. No maternity leave.

Having a baby really makes you appreciate social programs.

Free medical care, a year of paid maternity leave, and $9 a day daycare — totally normal here in Quebec, but unthinkable to a lot of US politicians.

It’s crazy thinking how different the experience would be if we lived in America.

Convincing lawmakers that paid sick days or paid family leave was not going to obliterate the economy despite the fact that EVERY FUCKING COUNTRY ON EARTH has them, but being able to say that aloud, was something.

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door,
in your own mirror
and each will smile
at the other's welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.

Eight years ago, Americans placed around $5 billion in sports bets. By 2028, we’ll have bet — and lost — a trillion dollars since 2018.

“Guys bond over sports bets, not sports, now,” says an addictions counselor working with sports bettors.
