I finished my very first tiny zine! It’s a trauma-informed list of things to try when you’re experiencing a panic response. (Images in thread.)
A small booklet standing upright on a red surface. It says “5 Things to try when you’re having a panic response”

“I am standing on my quiet balcony, against the city that unfurls like a big sonic carpet. There is a betrayal to being alive because it means to have outlived.”

Now listening to the new album from Lebanese composer Yara Asmar. It’s oblique and highly experimental ambient music. I definitely recommend it, and I recommend reading her account of the making of the album on the Bandcamp page.

I really enjoyed listening to this new album from Portland, Maine band Weakened Friends. It has a very 90s-Alternative vibe (including a cover of Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn”) and I love a girl who can wail her vocals.

This is a beautiful album. I’m listening now and it really gets the “fleeting” part of “fleeting beauty”. Spare and poignant.

I feel this way about a lot of the music reviews and interviews I wrote in the 2010s. It’s almost all gone now. I don’t blame the small publishers for running out of money to keep their server space, but it’s sad to know that all that work just went away.

Now listening to a new album from London artist feeo. Goodness is experimental electronica that sounds like a slightly-unsettling dream. It’s sad, spooky, challenging and beautiful.

Yeah, I think “post-punk” could definitely apply too. I sometimes find the labels helpful just for giving people a very general idea of what sandbox you’re playing in, but they become silly pretty fast.

I feel like genre labels can be pretty subjective and goofy, but if I had to pick for this clip alone, I’d say indie rock or art rock.

I’ve finished the rough sketches for all 32 frames. I sort of like it loose like this, but I hope to keep working on some details.

My first new release this week is Figure In Blue from the 87-year-old jazz saxophonist and flautist Charles Lloyd. So far, it’s deeply resonant. I love jazz that really makes you feel something and this is that.

They do go into the neurobiological basis, including the evolutionary/survival basis. I believe the book came out pre-covid, which is kind of a shame, because I’d be interested to read their take on the ongoing impact of the pandemic.

I’ve been reading this book pretty slowly, but I’m finding it really interesting. I haven’t gotten to any suggestions for how we remedy loneliness, or what to say to people who are experiencing it, but Cacioppo & Patrick’s theories are a great framework for understanding why it afflicts us.

Human Nature and the Need for Social Connection
John T. Cacioppo & William Patrick
"One of the most important books about the human condition to appear in a decade." —Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness

The title “loneliness” has the dot of the “I” removed from the rest of the word and off on its own.

Now listening to a new album from London producer/composer Leon Vynehall. It’s categorized as House music, but it’s really something unique. Not quite EDM, not quite R&B. It’s moody and a little heavy, but then the beat drops.

This is actually the view from my deck, which still seems unreal, even after living up here for over a decade. It requires a vehicle with four-wheel drive, or a few hours of hiking from the main road to get here.
