TIL Kristallnacht and the fall of the Berlin Wall happened on the same day of the year. Stark opposites.
87 years ago today, the Kristallnacht burned. 36 years ago today, the Berlin Wall fell.

Whether from the darkness of 9.11.1938 or light of 9.11.1989, the lesson for 🇩🇪 in 2025 is clear: Fight for freedom. Stop fascists. #StandWithUkraine. Their fight for freedom & peace is ours.

Thing is, AI has become too big to save and it's only because AI companies are taking on astronomical debt levels, secured mostly by their business with each other. For govt, a bailout would be a trillion $ open-ended commitment. When the music stops, it will be very, very ugly.
I do really think these folks are underestimating how bad the AI backlash can get if the industry needs a bailout

people are still furious about the 2008 bailout and that was almost two decades ago
Tech guys six months ago: haha yes we’re cutting all this WASTEFUL spending by eliminating medical research and USAID

Tech guys now: yes I think taxpayers will be excited to bailout my non consensual pornography machine

Mm hm. No mention of the sexism Franklin was constantly forced to endure in this cosy little, “they were all respectful colleagues, actually” article.

Tldr: Watson and Crick made their DNA breakthrough after stealing Franklin's photos of chromosomes. She got no credit. Watson is also an inveterate racist and sexist.

This article explains rather well why Ukrainians are right to regard ordinary Russians as culpable in the war. Facilitators

But it makes for depressing reading.

I shall have to get her book, however

Two things can be true at the same time, Canada.

1. Yes, I’m disappointed with some of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s approaches so far, particularly around climate action, and his definations of “nation-building.” We should expect better.

2. Carney is still light-years better than Pierre Poilievre.

I resent rich people who take away the funds for food stamps to buy another yacht.

Hey @gotransit.bsky.social, a detour on Lakeshore W from Oakville to Bramalea to go to Union is insane, esp when you have to wait 30min at Bramalea for a connecting train. Why on Earth no direct bus from Oakville to Union???

I mean, Yasser Arafat was also a Nobel Laureate. So was Aung san Suu Kyi, who went on to run cover for Myanmar's violence against the Rohingya. Hell, in '73 they gave the prize to Henry Kissinger.

So, you know, it's a little hit-or-miss.
Beginning to wonder if the Nobel Peace Prize can ever recover from this.

you either need universal basic income for humans or you must limit the use of Gen AI in such a way that humans aren’t radically impoverished as a result.

you cannot have both, both for morality reasons and also because this is the kind of thing that can result in globally-nightmarish conflict.
This seems more like an argument for universal basic income than for limiting technology. (I think both are probably futile in the current political environment, but I’d prefer the latter.)
