This is literally an oil pipeline and not only do we massively subsidize it with our tax dollars but it is our leading cause of disabling injury and premature death.

We are not an especially clever people.

NEW: “Toderian says it’s easy to be distracted by futuristic innovations like electric cars, drone delivery networks & hyperloops. ‘The real solutions are a lot less sexy and a lot more common sense… Tech won’t save us if we get the fundamentals wrong.”

I was 1 of 3 urban experts asked to weigh in.

Amazing Emergency Naked Ride. Here’s the moment thousands of riders rolled through the protests at the ICE facility and cheers erupted. 😮💯

Just saw a car ad that tried to sell being stuck in traffic as quality family time. I’ve never felt more sure that we’re near the collapse of car culture.

While we work on our voter guide and potential endorsements, we want to hear what voters thought of the candidates' answers to the Better Blocks questionnaire.

Let us know who your choice for mayor and council would be in this quick survey.

"Babies receiving early intervention through IDEA Part C and Medicaid funding have healthier developmental outcomes and are less likely to need special education by the time they enter kindergarten, which can save states millions of dollars."

Something I haven't seen covered extensively with regards to the Department of Education is the fact that the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) funds early intervention services, along with Medicaid. EI is usually free, or very low cost for families.

A perfect illustration of which "lifestyle" actually imposes itself on public space, public safety, and the public purse.

Bike issue? Our friends from Grove Street Bikes will again be at Grove Path Plaza by 6:00, probably a bit earlier, to help you with minor fixes and fine tuning.

The Queensboro Bridge finally has separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians — but the long-overdue upgrade still falls short of its full potential because the city has failed to install proper markings five months after the new footpath opened.

why would we design school zones to look safe and attractive with fun mobility for students when we can have this instead?!?!?

A city of drivers expands, rapidly and inevitably, into sprawl.

A city of pedestrians, cyclists, and transit-users settles gradually and elegantly into itself.

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion. The issue is around Class 3 e-bikes, and the terminology bleed that causes a lot of people to conflate electric mopeds with e-bikes. Expecting enforcement officers to know this nuance is also a lost cause right now.
davidzipper.bsky.social
My unpopular urbanist opinion is that big, hyperfast two-wheelers are a menace and should be banned from bike lanes/paths (with enforcement).

These things endanger everyone riding a bike or legal e-bike. Worse, they deter some from even trying.
E-bikes have evolved into e-motorcycles. Law enforcement is lagging behind.
Serious injuries are on the rise in emergency rooms around the country, as electric cycles become bigger and faster. Lawmakers and police departments are scrambling to address the problem.

Terrible story but great reporting by Laura Penington of the Denver Post:
- "A man died... after being hit by the driver of a van while riding his bike"
- "the driver struck him from behind"

And some extra context that you rarely ever see:
- "There are no bike lanes along that stretch of road"

Probably because they all carry guns on the job and train to use them, while a very small minority train on and use bikes for work. Ditto with their usually thorough knowledge of cars. E-bikes and … those other vehicles are a somewhat understandable learning curve, but it has to happen!
