I think how you design a good ship to ship combat/adventures TTRPG is that you remember that the ocean and the weather are themselves characters

(Continuing my soapbox) adventurers are better when they either come to terms with "fuck you got mine" or become heroic not by slaying villains, but by struggling against the socioeconomics which create them. Also does away with the "western culture good, savages evil" issue when its All Just People

"The orcs are marauding because they're evil" no dipshit it's because their god lost the conflict of divine forces a thousand years ago and they got pushed into the Barren Wastelands where there's no food, and the legacy of hate between their god and ours crushed any hope of reconciliation.

"Dull ennui of killing not for moral justification or superiority but for the simple truth that the killed existed in a context that threatened the safety of the killer's loved ones or objectives" my beloved. Fantasy that recognizes the inherent moral grayness in worlds with resource scarcity 👌

Jokes aside, by virtue of playing a combat-centric TTRPG system, DnD or otherwise, you should write a character who can and will use the systems the game encourages you to use; IE, why the fuck else would you be an adventurer if you weren't willing to kill? Go home and be a family man otherwise.

Tbh I think one of the appeals of making a Very Obviously Combat Focused Character is the ability to be So Visibly Good at Fight that you prevent fights before they start. I played an exiled gnoll princess once in a criminal underworld game and loads of fights were prevented via "go ahead. Try me."
