Right now, the US has easily the most staffing triggers I have ever seen in one plan

A whopping 39 separate facilities and areas have a below minimum number of staff available to operate normally and initiatives are being put in to mitigate that and ensure continuous safe operations

iirc part of it is because when there was a big push to make the US metric in the 70s and 80s, there were some road signs that were made up to be metric, and a lot of it was in southern Arizona

They were already working mandatory overtime and now they are working unpaid as well.

It is in unrealistic to not expect severe degradation in flight safety under these circumstances.

I'm working on an article for @leehamnews.com about why NextGen, the most recent ATC upgrade plan, failed after costing ~$15 billion.

Important context: a string of upgrade failures preceded it, going all the way back to the 1970s.
