I adore my Labrador.
I do not understand people who get emotionally invested in the idea that free will doesn't exist, but then again, I suppose they had no choice.

A lot of people will only believe something is a problem if they can find a way to blame a Democrat for it. Democrats, for some reason, seem eager to validate this habit.

The thing that strikes me about all of this pieces is that, if you think about it, it occurs to you that the people who write these articles are trying to criticise people like Nick Fuentes without once calling them Nazis or describing their views as Nazism.
One more example of "the Woke Right" narrative, where the right tries to frame members who have gone too far as actually sort of leftist. In Fuentes case, it is the overt nature of the anti-semitism. Dreher has no problem working for a govt whose leader (Orban) engages in dog-whistle anti-semitism.

Amazing!! Women Help Women (womenhelp.org) is manufacturing their own abortion pills in order to make abortion safer, simpler and more accessible across borders. They designed an eco-friendly combi-pack that's easier to mail discreetly and centred around women’s experiences and needs.

The West trying to understand the rise of fascism, but due to entrenched bigotry, reject the idea that anti-LGBT extremism packaged as "Gender Critical" IS in fact the fascist Trojan Horse.

Like the leaders of Troy admiring their wide collection of model horses while wondering why Troy is on fire.
This is also lowkey another of those "begging & pleading cis people pay attention to trans women" issues, since the best way to see this with clarity was actually a few years back, when nazis were involved in an anti-trans rights protest & the Australian Jewish Association actually defended them...
Antisemitism is real and scary, with a growing presence in this country. Problem is, no one in power wants to acknowledge the far right's responsibility for that, because they'd have to acknowledge that there's a racist core at the heart of this country. So they focus on watermelon earrings.

The people who ran r/the_donald back in 2018 explicitly had this attitude - "If we cannot co-opt it, we must destroy it" - towards "the default" subreddits and Reddit itself.

They participated in an effort, led by a literal neoNazi, to harass the moderators enforcing community anti-hatred rules.
There’s a specific mechanism in authoritarian movements that we’re seeing play out in real-time across American media and tech. It’s a simple rule: "If we cannot co-opt it, we must destroy it."

It is the logic of "scorched earth." It's the logic of the Nero Decree and it's happening right now. 🧵

Temp fixes for both can be done in your settings:

For WhatsApp: Settings>Privacy>Advanced>Block unknown messages.

I miss being young. Back when I was a kid, I dreamed of how we'd have all these new technologies and it would make our lives awesome.

Now, every time a new technology comes out, my first thought is "how will rich assholes use it to exploit the rest of us?"
Plenty of nominally human beings have already exploited thousands of people with these kinds of damage. What happens when AI gets involved? Hell, what happens if AI somehow becomes competent at it?

Don't mind me. This would be an LJ rant if I still used mine.

If I controlled Disney I would put it all in the public domain and wind down the shop. But, if they didn't let me do that, then I'd just be pumping out Muppet films every two to three years. I do not understand why they are sleeping on the Muppets.

So there is already an ai-generated whitewashing campaign to bury the name of the Muslim man, Ahmed al Ahmed, who disarmed one of the Bondi Beach shooters, and replace his identity with a white guy name and that’s why even a thimble of our potable water powering this tech is too fucking much.

Democrats should really mention more often how Russia interfered with the election to help Donald Trump. They really need to be more willing to invoke anger so they can harness it.

The Wall Street ideology is that the entire human condition can, and should be, financialized. They also happily admit that markets respond only to fear and greed.

That is, they want all of human relations to favor those with more money and to be run according to the logic of fear and greed.

over the past like five years, I’ve had to argue with people that there is no longer any plausible deniability when expressing how much you like harry potter shit. so much of her shit is in the public consciousness that continuing to support it just Sends a Message

The wealthy and the powerful want to destroy the ability of the public to stay informed. This is not new: they resent the "peasantry" being able to think for ourselves.

Always vote to expand library funding. Always protest the closure of information resources.

A defining feature of the Trump years is how he has an almost magical ability to conjure circumstances that convince people who were publicly thought to Know Better to in fact prove that they Know Worse.

Equal parts dismaying surprise and vindicating "I knew it!" moments.

It's the first weekend after Titanic opened, and I'm watching it in a packed house. Kate Winslet drops her clothes, and a guy in the middle of the theater shouts "D'oh!"
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

A tiny trial in New York has shown that personalized mRNA vaccines can provoke massive, lasting immune responses against pancreatic cancer, even as sweeping federal cuts now threaten the fragile labs required to produce them.
