Q: Politico reported on a group chat of young Republicans. Does this just reflect some bad apples?

HOCHUL: Some bad apples? These are the future of the GOP. This is so vile it's hard to find the words to put into context ... there's gotta be consequences ... this bullshit has to stop.

Highway 120 through the Yosemite High Country closed with the storm the last few days. I love thinking about places like this under the snow with nobody around - one of the best things to do in winter.

Good summer times at Pothole Dome. A strong swimming recommend for those who haven’t been.

Super interesting (well, to me) thread that gets to some of my questions about this bsky.app/profile/mike...

Since we're getting a crash course in DoD reprogramming authority, CRS has a good report on it linked below. Some important points:

Congress gives DoD reprogramming authority because when you're dealing with a trillion dollars, some stuff is probably going to need to be changed over 12 months
anonlis.bsky.social
In other words, are staff being told that this is okay because it’s temporary and/or will be made whole or posthumously blessed by Congress? Has the Speaker made any assurances to this effect?
anonlis.bsky.social
A good basic question would be: does DOD intend to backfill these other appropriations if Government reopens? (Keeping in mind this is still all illegal, but what’s the plan here, how is it being tracked, what if a hastily-done recode goes awry)
anonlis.bsky.social
Furthermore, they clearly think this akin to moving money between checking and savings, a simple beep boop in an app. There are a lot of mechanics in public budgets with a lot of detailed accounting. People are going to have to recode a bunch of things in order for this to work, and then? Undo it?
anonlis.bsky.social
Because journalists, like most people, black out when presented with something that combines arcane budget systems, big numbers, and statutory language. They don’t realize that a number can be a law in itself. “DOD shall spend up to $16252837.01 on pool noodles” is not a suggestion

We are living through the most consequential shift in the constitutional government of the United States in over a hundred and fifty years and nobody seems to have even noticed yet.

Congress no longer holds the power of the purse, the executive can just do whatever they want with federal monies

Republicans are aiming next to dismantle the marine mammal protection act, which protects whales, dolphins, manatees, polar bears, and sea otters.. among other ocean wildlife. 🦦

I love it. Makes me happy.
Weird that I'm now seeing your post here after I just read about the bill to end the 1970s marine mammal legislation to protect these beautiful creatures.

It showed that the consultants still assumed good faith, and then Walz was put in a position where he ended up agreeing with Vance and making him look reasonable. Vance basically stole Walz’s decency amd used it as cover
anonlis.bsky.social
Just the fact that Walz was so clearly unprepared for Vance to baldface lie about anything and everything during the debate was malpractice

I don't understand why U.S. reporters so regularly seem to let politicians get away with 'I haven't seen that' about stuff a) they obviously know and b) is directly relevant to their job. Did they sign some kind of agreement never to ask a follow-up question?

It is, quite literally, *his job* to know whether the executive branch is implementing the programs and spending Congress authorized. This isn't pretending he doesn't know what awful thing Trump said. This is his Constitutional obligation that he is now derelict from fulfilling.

If any child in your life has an IEP or 504 plan:

Trump fired (we think) all of the employees in the office at the US Department of Education that disburses special education funds from the federal government that school districts use to pay for those plans.
