But—a big but—Dalyet insists that Miharu should visit Titan Colony first so she can understand what he has to offer in trade to Earth. He says she has to see it to understand, and he refuses to explain in advance.”
Jeff paused to shake his head in disbelief at Dalyet’s demand. “Lastly, he wants my wife or my daughter to join Miharu for the trip to Titan, but he also hasn’t explained why he wants a sentient AI to visit Titan.”
“I’m not going,” Ai and Addy chimed in unison.
Jeff exhaled loudly. “Good. This whole thing is as dodgy as half-price sushi, and I don’t want my family mixed up in it. But— “Jeff sucked in a deep breath, “as RRI’s chief of security, I need to stay close to Miharu. So, I’m going.”

Although the knife didn’t perform the way it would’ve in the movies, it had the desired effect of drawing my target’s attention away from his victim to me. He laughed a deep belly laugh, advancing toward me with the confidence of a high school bully shaking a kindergartner down for lunch money. A thick Russian accent punctuated his taunting words.
“You wandered into wrong kitchen, little devochka.” He rested the spine of the machete’s blade on his shoulder, rotating his body to aim the taser at me along his fully extended arm in a surprising simulacrum of competitive pistol shooting. “Now, we see if you piss yourself.”
Time gladly accommodated my response by nearly halting. As the darts sprang slowly forward from the weapon, their leads starting to unravel, I crouched down low to dodge by them, tightening the fingers on my right hand together into a rigid, ninja-like knife shape. Jabbing the fingertips of my flattened hand in an upward strike to the nerve bundle in the man’s armpit, I was gratified to hear the beginning of his yelp of pain as he released the machete.

Tennyson paused in unpacking the grocery bags, eyes narrowing. “I’m not the one making loneliness into a profession, Poe. Why don’t you scurry off and use that big math brain of yours to calculate the odds that anyone actually cares about you.”
Another sharp barb that Poe didn’t know how to dodge, another flinch. Nearby, Manny let out a sharp breath, reaching for Tennyson’s arm, but Poe didn’t stick around to hear any more. He didn’t want to hear what insults Tennyson thought to throw next. He didn’t even bother flipping Tennyson off. Taking his mug, he hurried across the kitchen and pushed his way through crowds, desperate to get back to the solitude of the basement before anyone could see the tears he was trying not to shed.

“And who was this? Your warden?” The minotaur bellows as he wrenches his weapon out of the floor with a crackle of rocks before swinging it high up over his head.

My lightning mana pierces me, but not as strong as before. I’ve been expending it rapidly since this mess started. But I have something else. I hastily and clumsily draw the demon into my lap, hugging them. I inhale…

My opponent’s arm tenses as he roars, spittle flying from his mouth. “Worthless. They have failed you!”

He swings down just as I exhale as hard as I can.

Fire.

It erupts from my mouth, first orange, then yellow, then white.

My throat screams.

The flames engulf the minotaur. It doesn’t stop the momentum of his swing, but luckily, we’re not there anymore, and the stone cracks where the morning star strikes and bites deep into the solid ground. It doesn’t even bounce up, that’s how dedicated the bull was to his swing.

The force of the fire actually pushes me and the demon back across the ground. Just enough to dodge the morning star—but just barely. The weapon landed just past my feet. The minotaur even manages to take a small stumbling hoofstep closer, and for a split second I worry that he’s going to swing again, but he just curls and roars defiantly against my heated attack.

Despite the great pain cooking my throat, I keep the flames going, squinting against the hot glare that makes my eyes water. Blindly, I fumble for the demon and try to adjust my grip on them so that I can stand and lift them at the same time.

Even with my body magic enhancements this is hard. I really should incorporate more resistance training into my routine, ¡conio!

Puerto Víbora, where Rosalinda is from, is based heavily on Panamanian culture. Quemaloco? That's based on Southern Mexico. The Castalena Quarter of Arcanfel (a giant walled city reminiscent of LA in size if not layout) is comprised of boroughs based on various Latin countries. ❤️

“Ay, dios mío. I am a Nocten,” I mutter with a tiny grimace.
“Told you.” Ignacio doesn’t even break his stride as he passes through the cafeteria’s automated exit. He does turn his head though as he adds over his shoulder, “I’ll get you black lipstick and some fishnets later.” There’s laughter in his voice.
My eyes narrow with incomprehension. “Fishnets? Are we going fishing somewhere?”
He stops and stares at me. Then he laughs, shakes his head, and keeps going. For a moment, it seems like he won’t explain, then he turns and says, “They’re like stockings, but they look like fishnets. El Gancho girls never thought about wearing ‘em? For real?” El Gancho. The nickname for Puerto Víbora. The borough my family moved to in the capital.
I go so far as to wrinkle my nose a bit. “No. We’d stink like fish guts.”
“I thought you liked fish!”
“You don’t know anything about fish.”
“El Gancho might reel ‘em up, but Quemaloco is still Castalena’s best place to eat fish.”
We pass under the shadow of an old elm tree, foggy breath trailing behind us as we pick up pace.
"No seras bobo," I scoff. "Just come over to Víbora already and eat a pescado frito."
Ignacio sucks at his teeth with an affronted look. "Oh I see how it is. You think your borough's flashier? Just cuz you fishermen can’t handle real food—"
"Real food with too much capsaicin—"
"Real music that awakens your heart—"
"Real noise that awakens your migraine—"
"And real words used the way they're supposed to be," Ignacio snaps, looking annoyed in a way I thoroughly enjoy. He rips open his breakfast sandwich and growls, "They. Are. Called. Popotes!" He takes a massive bite and glares.
The corners of my mouth nudge up. "Wrong. Straws. Are. 'Carrizos'."
He throws his hands up. I actually have to lock my throat to keep from laughing.
