I'm going to hang my shingle out properly by 'fessing that I've been reading Tolkien, and about Tolkien, for over half a century, and I'm currently obsessed with Rings of Power

One last chance to soak up the sun before I head back to Scotland (Bells Rapids, Western Australia)

In just over 24 hours I'll be needing my big coat 😂

You gently run your hand through the rack. You can feel it—pure cotton, rich wool, Irish linen. The plump buttonholes are handsewn; the buttons attached with a firm shank. You flip the price tag over. It's affordable

You buy the jacket and go home, which is only 15 mins away. Your apt is $600/month

This is fundamentally correct

I love it warts and all. I read it at the 'right' age

Wasn't it Richard Adams (Watership Down) who talked about all of us getting our ideas by linking into the great web of story?

happy bday New Zealand writer Katherine Mansfield, b.1888.

Is there? Who's that then?

Honestly, the unintentional irony of this "slams misogyny" would be hilarious if it wasn't so depressing

I write a bit. I paint a bit. I study and debate a bit

I'm not really good at anything. But I know how vital it is that someone - many someones - excel in all the arts

If all we have of music is recordings, all we have of art is old paintings, of learning just files? We are a dead species

They are tasty by all accounts but one of my colleagues ate some and ended up with liver flukes, so I'm in no hurry to try it

You can tell I'm only a tourist, because I'm ridiculously excited about this kangaroo with a big joey in her pouch, hanging about in my dad's front garden in Western Australia

And their flowers are so big and pretty. You go, little insect-eating plantlets! Have your moment in the sun

Yeah, I think so, though I was thinking more about some Scifi/horror I've read than any RL species

Every where I go in Western Australia, these tiny, unassuming, ground-dwelling Drosera (sundews) have begun a mad race up the nearest object (like an ant infected with Cordyceps) to put out out sprays of completely unexpected flowers. I almost feel if I stand still they'll be scrambling up me

The reason the Right are so invested in the myth that the arts have no value isn’t because the arts don’t generate wealth (they do); it’s that studying the arts teaches people to imagine better ways of judging the value of an idea than by counting how much money it makes…

Today I'm launching a Crowdfunder with the incredible Grace Quantock.

The aim of this is to get Grace's book "Living Well with Chronic Illness" into health centres across the UK.

We be so grateful for your support.

How to write:

Read
Read
Think a bit
Read
Go for a walk
Write
Read some more

Everything Joanne says here is true and invaluable advice

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 1579: If you’re going to write in any genre (children’s fiction, SFF, romance, etc), you need to read EXTENSIVELY in that genre. You need to read current authors in the genre. You need to know what’s been done; what tropes exist; how the genre has changed.

It cracked up

I cracked up (apparently I shouted some surprising words)

Then my dad cracked up (he had to get dressed and drive me to the ferry that was just about to leave. Between us we were running an entire country's allocation of adrenalin

Very much so 😟

Also, I have a habit of hitching up my trousers with two fingers under the belt. Ask me how I found out I have this habit 😥
