I live in a walkable neighbourhood, close to mass transit, in the third largest metro in the country. And my backyard is a country bear jamboree.

Canada is just not beating the stereotypes.

Massive missed opportunity that Canada's coat of arms is like a lion and unicorn instead of a beaver with two vickers machine guns
Been working my way through the Gaunt's Ghosts novels as my casual reading.

They're not gonna win the Nobel, but good fun.
Elsewhere, Vimes thinks something like 'If humanity had a design flaw, it was a tendency to bend at the knee'.

there is one week every october in this city where early fall transitions to vancouver grey for the next five months

and it’s always spectacular
The system is breaking in visible ways now. I think we've hit the end of the patch jobs and jury-rigs that let the medical system limp through 23-24.
Are we allowed to ask why they left Greece?
It's opportunity cost all the way down.
It's a low culture / high culture divide.
Can I footnote that it extremely depends on who and how the human specimen's remains got included?
The modal "Legacy" section of a wiki page on a general strike is that 8 people died, 20 were charged and 10 of them ducked jail due to a sympathetic jury, 2 organizers went on to middling backbencher legislative careers, and a park was renamed.
honestly would love to know where this idea that general strikes are the only effective/valid form of protest comes from. seems to have spread online in the last year or so (noticeably nobody was arguing that you shouldn't go to Gaza protests because they weren't general strikes)
I need whoever is spreading this shit to shut the fuck up and quit doing the work of the enemy
Yeah, even at the most basic level, "Are there enough people sitting in cubicles?"and "Are there enough people with rifles?" covers the two basic functions of the federal government which are extremely important and very different!
I haven't kept up to date, but at least going into the pandemic, Quebec microbrewers had real regulatory constraints on distribution (www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...).
YEP!

If you been there, you been there. No need to belabour the point
I went the other way and am also extremely happy.

If you've been around dudes north of 50 on the tools, you know what I was trying to avoid.
You'd think surly old street toms and babies are like oil and water.

But the winningest quality of the average cat (and street cats most of all) is knowing when to run, when to fight, and when to be passive aggressive.
we were worried about him and the baby, but they made peace; baby would flop on top of cat, cat would peel himself from underneath baby, glaring, and lie back down 18 inches away so baby could do it again.

anyway, when we finally let him out of the laundry room, Elizabethan collar still around his neck, he came tearing downstairs and immediately caught a mouse.

he did not kill the mouse; as we discovered, that was not his custom.

he just liked to catch them.
Let the man cook.

Tell me you wouldn't watch this. Replies are suggesting other footballs to include for some sort of freakish football decathalon.
international tournament where each match-up involves three events: American football, Canadian football, and Australian rules football.
Canadian PM is one of the most secure elected jobs in the world ('elected dictatorship' in the poli sci literature). Carney should be especially secure as the leader who saved members' jobs and pensions from the jaws of defeat.

Rumbles of caucus revolt this early is a bad sign.
It isn't clear why the knives are coming out. Gould's camp is clearly one of the sources for the story, but there's enough meat here to suggest unhappiness on the left flank and the ambitious empty suits (no shortage of those in Liberal land).
Interesting profile of Carney. I didn't learn much new info from the text. But the subtext is:

1. knives are coming out;
2. becoming PM was the goal, he's managing events not steering a particular direction; and
3. he's never had a job that relies on being his subordinates' first choice.

His elbows-up enthusiasm won him the election. Now he’s governing like a Bay Street exec.

I appreciate why Bloodvein is doing this (they're winning).

But the Kinew government's failure to enforce criminal law or negotiate based on existing law and treaty is genuinely concerning.

I dont think anyone has thought through what the reaction looks like if the treaties are dead letters.

One thing that rules about Catholicism is the Pope issuing a blistering statement that everyone who ignores climate change is going to hell is meaningless but like changing arcane details of how the Vatican bureaucracy works is potentially earth shaking bsky.app/profile/weel...
