the place where they really went off the rails is EOIR being completely sidelined because the backlog was treated as a law of nature. and that all happened well before trump. nothing in the system was ever designed to operate without periodic big amnesties.

(actually what the FTB lady said was “divide by zero? that’s a complicated question, i’ll ask my supervisor.” the supervisor figured it out. the ca civil service is pretty decent usually, and their recruiting practices, while byzantine, seem pretty scrupulously fair.)

i once had to divide by zero on my california tax return, years ago. called the franchise tax board about it. they said there was a special schedule to fill out if you claim certain tax treaty benefits for federal taxes that california doesn’t recognize.

The thing is, while dying can really suck, being dead is really a lot harder on your loved ones than on you, since you’re not around for it. So you might turn your fear of death into being nice to others. But that doesn’t work if you’re a total narcissist.

Yup. Or more particularly, because he wasn’t a citizen from birth. Ted Cruz, for instance, wasn’t born in the US, but he didn’t have to naturalize (American parents) so his candidacy was not a problem. Not in that way, anyhow. 😜
