This is the D'Angelo performance that I've never forgotten. This song was already a huge hit but the way he took it from contemporary R&B to church revival illustrated how connected those idioms are. A revelation for those who didn't know, and an affirmation for those who did.

Whereas Harris told MSNBC that she believes whether or not Israel has committed genocide is a fair and honest question to ask, Cory Booker explicitly said to the "I've Had it" podcast that he thinks addressing the question of whether Netanyahu has committed crimes would undermine resolving conflict.

⚡️NEW: Trump defends Hamas crackdown on gangs in Gaza, likens it to cleaning up Washington, D.C.

Speaking from the White House, Trump said Hamas “did take out a couple of gangs that were very bad… and killed a number of gang members.”

“And that didn’t bother me much, to be honest with you,” he added. “That’s okay.”

Trump compared it to how his own administration handled violent gangs, claiming “Venezuela sent their gangs into the U.S., and we took care of those gangs,” and Washington, D.C., once “one of the worst cities in the country,” is now a better place thanks to similar crackdowns.

“Now it’s safe. You can walk to work. Isn’t it nice?” Trump said. Correspondent claims: "Hamas is rearming itself as a police force, shooting rivals. What's the message to Hamas?

"Because they want to stop the problems. They have been open about it. And we gave them an approval for a period of time..."

A reminder that Hamas signed an agreement with Fatah and other factions in December 2024 on the formation of a technocratic committee to govern Gaza after the war and then Hamas insisted on this provision being put into ceasefire deals in January and March 2025—only for Israel to remove it.

🇪🇬 New from AP:
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told The Associated Press that a 15-member Palestinian technocratic committee has been selected to administer postwar Gaza, with all names vetted by Israel and approved by all Palestinian factions, including Hamas.

Abdelatty said the group would “take care of the daily life of the people in Gaza,” under the oversight of a “Board of Peace” chaired by U.S. President Donald Trump, which would supervise reconstruction funds.

He added that Hamas members accepted the plan and “have no role in the transitional period,” while Israel must withdraw from Gaza to allow aid and the committee’s deployment.

Egypt will also soon host a reconstruction and recovery conference for Gaza with support from the U.S. and Germany, Abdelatty said.

🟢 Journalist Islam Ahmed was freed today from Israeli custody.

He documented the siege of Kamal Adwan Hospital and the work of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyeh almost daily from October 2024 until his forcible disappearance by Israeli forces that December, along with hospital staff and patients.

He left behind his wife and infant child to remain embedded inside the hospital, determined to bear witness and show the world what was happening in northern Gaza during Israel’s “Generals’ Plan” phase of ethnic cleansing.

Last year, we wrote about survivor Taylor Cadle. When she was 12, she told police she’d been raped. They said she was lying and charged her with false reporting. She then took the extraordinary measure of recording the next act of abuse.

Now, Taylor has legal counsel and filed a lawsuit.

People who say "you can't possibly read everything you cite" are saying a lot about themselves, IMO.

It doesn't have to be a heavy lift. I spend about half an hour a day processing new-to-me papers by organizing them in my reference managers & adding topical tags so I can create bibliographies.

How W. E. B. Du Bois responded to government policing of "anti-American" sentiment during the 1910s:

"I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, 'We are seeking to have the Constitution of the United States thoroughly and completely enforced.' ”
Federal agents invaded even the offices of The Crisis and the National Association for the advancement of colored people and asked searching questions: " just what, after all, were our objects and activities?” I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, “We are seeking to have the constitution of the United states thoroughly and completely enforced.” It took some ingenuity, even for Southerners, to make treason out of that.

🟢 Hamas hailed the release of Palestinian prisoners as a “bright national milestone” in the struggle against Israeli occupation, calling it proof of unity and steadfastness among Palestinians. In a statement Monday, the group said the “flood of free people” marked a historic victory achieved through sacrifice and resistance. It accused Netanyahu and his ministers of trying to undermine public joy but said their crimes could not break the Palestinian spirit. Hamas contrasted its treatment of Israeli captives—“according to Islamic and civilized values”—with what it called Israel’s systematic torture of Palestinian detainees, urging international institutions to act against these abuses.

The statement came as Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s Secretary-General, Ziad al-Nakhala, issued a more restrained message, saying the group had “hoped for better results” from the exchange deal.

My latest is the story of how my community has rallied to protect and defend our neighbors in recent days, as ICE has targeted the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago. "This is not a story about a moment of victory, but a moment of being reminded of our power."
They Came for Our Neighbors. We Showed Up.
Before long, there were dozens, and then hundreds of people in the streets, watching and responding.
