When this regime is over and buried, I don't want to hear about oh it's not worth the money or it's too petty to worry about. The order to bulldoze this illegal and unconstitutional monstrosity should be signed on Day 1.

It’s apple picking season so I am required to share this incorrect but humorous review of Stayman Winesap apples with you
waiterich.bsky.social
Me: Stayman Winesap apples are so good, can’t wait to pick them again in the fall 🍎 💕

Apple Rankings:
Wrap a damp tee ball in an old t-shirt and you will begin to experience the masochistic horror that is the Stayman Winesap Apple. Each jaw-breaking bite is taken on the chin like a punch from Apollo Creed, and then followed by an interesting wine-like flavor that is most likely comprised of 40% tooth blood. The semi-tart wallop bellowing forth from this tank-fruit is absorbed by a hardened cloth-like skin that drapes down your neck like a swallowed roll of used medical gauze. Discovered in Leavenworth County, Kansas in 1866 by Dr. Joseph Stayman as a seedling of the Winesap Apple, for some reason the apple world (helmed by the Stark Bros.) quickly deemed this new cultivar as worthy of national attention. It must be assumed that anything outside of the murder fields of Gettysburg was welcome in this troublesome post Civil War era.

🏅 #5 RANKED CIDER APPLE

Everyone’s talking about Milpay, but reminder that USDA is currently using excess 25 funds to pay for WIC and School Lunch. They say they have like maybe a month of that left.

Red States are going to lose their fucking minds if they can’t draw those soon.

i keep meaning to make a brown butter fat-washed rum so i can have the hot buttered rum without the oil slick, because the taste is amazing but i prefer the mouthfeel of a toddy

absolutely love butter just not floating on a drink

I’m not sure what we need to do now to put the fear of god in our leaders, but it isn‘t matching turnout at marches. It‘s some other thing to demonstrate what they did: not simple numbers, but their commitment and the strength of their bonds with each other.
whetstone.bsky.social
The achievements of the civil rights movement are different to comprehend in modern context. They were working with pen and paper, newspapers, and wired telephones.

To turn out so many was proof of deep commitment and tight social networks. Terrifying stuff.
whetstone.bsky.social
Basically both the cost to the organizers and the stakes for me are both lower to turn out my body into the streets. It’s worth doing but it doesn’t represent both deep real world social ties and the willingness to sacrifice materially to show up.
whetstone.bsky.social
Modern mass demonstrations are trivially easy to both organiz and attend, by comparison. The masses on the mall clearly represented the tip of a terrifying iceberg. Whereas I will march Saturday but I know about it because of social media and I can literally walk there.
whetstone.bsky.social
It’s probably possible to quantify the achievements of the civil rights movement somehow, to get a better comparison of what kind of strength the million man march represented in modern terms, but it sure as heck isn’t a headcount.
angus.bsky.social
Seeing people say that "by the numbers" Stancil is right about No Kings being bigger than the civil rights mvt. But no. That's not how any of this works.

It's like saying I'm a bigger organizer than Greta Thunberg because I'm taller. It's not technically true, it's just stupid.

I should mention that I appreciate this framing from a Christian. It's a fantastic example of calling out the problem without demonizing anyone who isn't the ancient equivalent of a Musk or Pinochet.

Many of us grew up in the church being taught to root for Moses, Daniel, and John the Baptist in the Bible, only to grow up and have our churches question our faith for not cheering on the Pharaohs, Nebuchadnezzars, and Herods in our world today.

Happy 9 years to this, the most prescient analysis from the 2016 election.

medium.com/@cd_hooks/st...
The overriding sense I’ve had this election is that despite Trump, and despite many bad years in Congress, the center-left hasn’t fully grappled with the meaning and consequences of the wave of reaction that has gripped the country since 2009. We don’t live anymore in a country with a ruling party and a loyal opposition.

this thread is fascinating. food for thought, although interrupting the cycle it describes sounds pretty thorny.

I have been thinking about the role shame plays for the radicalization of Republicans a lot lately too but in a very different way. I believe for some people, feeling shame causes them to further entrench into illiberal, authoritarian beliefs. This came from an experience at a local town hall.

"And yet Táíwò’s own position misses something fundamental about the world we now inhabit. Shame does not operate in a vacuum...today, the sturdy ground that once formed shame’s foundation has collapsed."
