In arbitrary order; beer, cats, philatelic history, broadcasting history, buses, architecture, the Peak District, the Yorkshire coast, cooking, jazz, classical, prog, football, cricket, Tom Lehrer, Flanders & Swann, not doing small talk, fighting against the grim meathook future on multiple fronts.

okay, time for a prompt post to distract us all from the horrors. quote this post with your areas of expertise, interest, hyperfixation and/or obsession and invite your audience to ask you questions about them.

So, people are going to have to pass A level english to live here are they? I hope they study what I did at A level, Translations by Brian Friel, about the colonial evil of the English forcing people to adopt the English language

The whiplash from 'we are going to build responsible AI' and 'were worried about the addictive nature of these tools'

To:

'Were going to build a porn bot', 'were building a additctive, endless scroll social media app' and 'were bringing back the addictive model'

Is pretty big

Saw a very similar road in (I think) Latvia on Matthias Schwarzer's excellent YouTube channel. I wouldn't have fancied being in the car on that stretch if anything broke down.

A great read. Neil's book on 1970s shops in Sheffield is a cracker too.

The fact it had a casino means that it had to have been the Cavendish on Bank Street. It changed its name to Baileys soon after, was later known as Annabel's, and then Silks, and now it's a jobcentre.

Never knew Lilli Palmer could sing! She surely couldn't have been any worse at it than her ex-husband.

Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tony Hart. And the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 11th and 15th anniversary of his death.

Quite liked the Ramada on Talbot Street, well worth your while if you can get a good deal. Comfortable and handy for the Cathedral Quarter (Duke of York etc).
And yes, very chatty! There were some very nice people from Bangor who I met in the bar who had "missed their last train".

I just fundamentally don't get why anyone would want this. if I had good ideas for movies then I would be making movies already. I'm not going to have a good time requesting movies from the slop factory

Surprised that the Clayton West branch survived Beeching and lasted as long as it did. There's a 15" gauge railway there now.

Sure.

Question 1: was the crushing of the Kronstadt rebellion justified?

Question 2: was the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956 justified?

Question 3: was the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 justified?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you are basically a tankie.

This week: Oi, Immigrants, A-Level English is the gold standard, a key milestone in proving your loyalty and usefulness to His Majesty. Pass it or fuck off.

If you agree that mandatory digital ID cards are a terrible idea, please ask your MP to sign my motion opposing them.

These plans risk turning us into checkpoint Britain. They must be scrapped.

Email your MP my motion: edm.parliament.uk/early-day-mo...
