The Earth Died Screaming - vivid evocation of a hellish apocalypse complete with fish raining from locust skies and what's Tom up to? Having a nap and dreaming about someone he loves. Just perfect.

Just a lovely, witty, trendsetting, stylish, and at times quite brilliant actor.

Correct. One of the people to whom "don't speak ill of the dead" absolutely does not apply

The best bit* about Watkins murder is that he clearly knew it was coming. He spent his entire life after being convicted living in fear. The cunt.

*there can be no best bit in this scenario but you know what I mean

Not only is it nonsense it's racist nonsense too. I'd rather be integrated with the contents of my kitchen bin than be associated with any of the appalling views expressed in that piece.

Frequently come across a rhetorical device on here that is used primarily by people who get paid to write words in a manner that entertains and informs but definitely should not irk or annoy and it's......quite bad actually?

Power not being available is quite telling. And the frequent rallies of head tennis consistently ending with Rotherham on the ball.

Picked up Lunch Poems by Frank O'Hara and had to make sure this Poem was in it and it is and it is, every time, basically perfect
POEM

Lana Turner has collapsed!
I was trotting along and suddenly it started raining and snowing
and you said it was hailing
but hailing hits you on the head
hard so it was really snowing and
raining and I was in such a hurry
to meet you but the traffic
was acting exactly like the sky
and suddenly I see a headline
LANA TURNER HAS COLLAPSED!
there is no snow in Hollywood
there is no rain in California
I have been to lots of parties
and acted perfectly disgraceful
but I never actually collapsed
oh Lana Turner we love you get up

It took me a few scenes to stop looking/waiting for the bits of the book I hoped were in there and instead just enjoy the film that I was watching. Can't quite articulate why without more thought but I think Steve Lockjaw works better on film than SP trying to do Brock Vond would have done.

Genuinely if you can’t tell the difference between a Tesco loyalty card and a mandatory digital ID being brought in explicitly to harden the border regime then maybe you shouldn’t be a journalist?

(1) It may not be an evil plot but the argument that it's not a likely consequence to be concerned about is at best naive
(2) The people arguing (1) are well aware that their data is everywhere, that's why they are concerned about (1) fgs. The proposed scheme exacerbates already existing risks.
robfordmancs.bsky.social
“It’s an evil plot to collect & sell our sensitive private data to Palantir”. Well (1) you’re a borderline conspiracy theorist (2) if you think your sensitive private data isn’t already on dozens of private companies databases as well as state databases (the NHS for example) you’re also a fantasist
davidjamesevans.bsky.social
The tech companies that build it will demand access to the data and use it for their own purposes; if it fucks up you have a very hardtime proving that it's fucked up; it won't solve the problem they say it's going to solve; any problems caused by data already held everywhere are made much worse
davidjamesevans.bsky.social
Even if "general privacy" (whatever that is) is "over anyway" that's not an argument for introducing something that exacerbates the problems caused by a lack of privacy.

Also, fucking "Britcard"? Ffs.

If I were to suggest that Wharton is among the GOATS, I would be correct, but fear she would think me gauche to deploy such a phrase.

"This, Mr Evans, is not the place for expressions redolent of plebeian sports-worship; beware being placed irrevocably beyond the pale of civilised discourse."

The most successful novelist of her generation can't actually enter this country to accept an award for fear of arrest, someone tell the BBC
henrymance.ft.com
What on Earth is this? An "in depth" BBC article about free speech in the UK that only cites examples of right-wing/ 'anti-woke' speech being suppressed. How can you mention Lucy Connolly but completely ignore Palestine Action / Just Stop Oil? Gob-smacking. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
How the simmering UK freedom of speech row reached boiling point
How did we reach a point where the UK is being compared to a 'tin pot Third World dictatorship'?

I'm starting to think that a cultural boycott is actually the most humane way to pressure a country like Israel. It's not coercive. It doesn't cost any lives. It barely even costs any livelihoods. The impact is powerful but almost entirely psychological.
gregk.co.uk
SORRY, YOU'LL FORGIVE ME FOR ASKING, BUT HAVE WE ALL OF A SUDDEN DECIDED THAT IT IS WRONG TO COLLECTIVELY PUNISH A CIVILIAN POPULATION FOR THE ACTIONS OF A BODY THAT CLAIMS TO SPEAK AND ACT ON THEIR BEHALF?
Kallas suggested she did not support attempts to exclude Israel from Eurovision, after Spain became the latest country to say it would boycott the song contest if Israel took part.

Asked about the issue, she said EU measures were intended to put pressure on the Israeli government to change course on Gaza, not to punish Israel or the Israeli people.

“All these steps that go to the direction of punishing Israeli people, I think are wrong and we are not really proposing them,” she said.
