England moaners and has beens will be out in force blaming Australia's lack of preparation in home conditions presumably.

Much as I can't abide that breed of England cricket fan who only watches cricket so that they can complain about anything and everything, I wish I was only vaguely aware of Zak Crawley's existence as a decent county batter who was destined to be overlooked by the England selectors

Not thematically autumnal but this thread has reminded me of dc Basehead's Play With Toys from 1992. Of which this is a representative track:

This New Yorker documentary about the 1988 UK government ban on broadcasting the voices of Sinn Féin and I.R.A. leaders is pretty good but they show *that clip from The Day Today with no explanation and no indicator that it is satire.

Cosy Red Riding Quartet.

You eat the scone. Crumbles. You crumble. You ruddy crumb. Dotty Proverbs is at the door. And you, you crumb, are already eating the scone. She rings the bell. Bell. Rings.
You've just made me realise what the true north-south divide is.

I think this distancing effect extends into the language of North American match reports vs say UK reporting on cricket or soccer.

I understand and enjoy watching baseball. But ask me what happened based on a report written for a North American audience and I'm stumped - even if I watched the game.
I felt this completely. Reading about “the baseball” on Bluesky this morning was by turns hilarious, wonderful, and oddly uplifting; made all the better by not understanding what the hell was going on. It was the best of American Bluesky.

Most top flight football matches in England are ultimately tedious because they are decided on "which team can get away with the most fouls every time a set piece is delivered into the box."

Surely an ethical use of AI would be to create an agent that floods them with hundreds of thousands of plausible but fake applications?
There is no journalistic task more imperative than getting eyes inside this process. The kind of thing historians wait for archives of dictatorships to open, when figuring out how the REAL nightmare begin.
