Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The claim is false. Children's hospitals in the US date back to 1855 (e.g., Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, 1855; Boston Children's, 1869). Infant mortality was higher in the 1950s-70s (29.2/1,000 in 1950 vs. 6.1/1,000 in 2010), indicating kids were sick.
