As a little birthday present to myself, I created my Substack "Incrementally Better". The first edition on why the EU AI Act is not truly risk-based (and more) is now live:

This article (£) is as insightful as concerning

"What I see is a disillusioned generation, doubtful that liberal democracy can do anything worthwhile. We need some new, fresh thinking — as well as a free and open environment in which to test, debate and challenge it — to prove it still can."

For this week's column I wrote about the way that the countercultural intellectual energy of the right - and lack thereof on the left - is drawing in young people, esp men, who would once have been drawn to radical leftist thinkers

On the way back from the Brussels Privacy Symposium (by @futureofprivacy.bsky.social and @brusselsprivacyhub.bsky.social). Fab event with great insights. The best as always is to see so many privacy friends. All that's missing is those two organisations posting about it here (nudge, nudge) #BPS2025

👀 Quite the chart, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas

(via Jack Clark's Import AI, open.substack.com/pub/importai...)
FRB Dallas projecting AI GDP boost over time. With a pretty matter of factly drawn 'extinction' scenario which tanks GDP rapidly in the 2030/40s.

Celestial Fireworks (widefield, annotated): First Amateur Detection of Light Echoes from 19th-Century Great Eruption of Eta Carinae - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - https://flic.kr/p/2pqiQri
The images in this gallery are the first amateur images of light echoes from the 19th-century Great Eruption of Eta Carinae. These light echoes have been detected by the Hubble Space Telescope and from large observatories such as the CTIO 4m telescope, but this is the first time that amateur images reveal these transient features. My other first amateur detection of light echoes from supernova SN1987a inspired me to try looking for the fainter echoes near Eta Carinae.

What are Light Echoes?
Light echoes occur when the initial flash from a bright source, like a supernova, is reflected back to us from a slightly different direction. Dust clouds in interstellar space reflect a portion of the outward-traveling light from the supernova, redirecting it towards Earth. These faint light echoes can be observed decades or centuries after the original flash. Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky, known for his contributions to supernovae, neutron stars, dark matter, and gravitational lenses, predicted the existence of light echoes as early as 1940. Together with Walter Baade, he coined the term 'supernova' in 1934 and proposed that faint echoes of historical supernovae could be visible long after the initial explosion.
The Great Eruption was a significant brightening of the star Eta Carinae that occurred in phases during the mid-19th century.
The light echoes are produced when the initial flash from the eruption is subsequently reflected off interstellar dust as light travels outward from ...

nanochat by Andrej Karpathy is neat - 8,000 lines of code (mostly Python, a tiny bit of Rust) that can train an LLM on $100 of rented cloud compute which can then be served with a web chat UI on a much smaller machine simonwillison.net/2025/Oct/13/...

There was a period in history during which full-plate armour was so impregnable, and ransoming back captured nobles so lucrative, that the knights could treat warfare as a game while their men-at-arms got slaughtered in the mud.

I think about that a lot when I look at modern politics.

If we survive this, and Democrats are able to take back power, I guarantee you we will have to endure think-piece after think-piece that demand the rest of us reach out, stop shaming, and forgive fascists and the crimes they’ve committed. I absolutely guarantee it.
