I agree w Emily there needs to be more housing for incremental life stages. I have 0 disagreements w her policy recommendations

My emphasis for "family" housing (as a developer) is on building Baby Maybe units rather than Studios, bc I think they are under supplied relative to demand

I'll explain🔽
Pro-housing voices from the right of center are increasingly focused on a "we need housing For Families" framing.

In a new column I explain why broad-based liberalization, especially for inexpensive types of housing, is important for helping people start families: www.governing.com/urban/to-sup...
To Support Families, Repair the Housing Ladder
The cost of housing is one big barrier to family formation. But simply building more single family homes isn't the answer.

The Walton family (who own Walmart) are worth over $400 billion, yet many of their employees are on SNAP.

Bezos is worth over $400 billion, many Amazon employees require SNAP.

The people who need help are not the problem.

It’s corporate greed. It’s an unwillingness to pay a living wage.
I do not enjoy calling, emailing, and posting about community dangers, but it feels necessary in the face of so many issues on our streets. I'd much rather just enjoy moving through the community.
People aren't "complaining for fun", they're documenting the daily reality of existing outside a 2-ton steel cage.

The first step to empathy is understanding the danger. I invite any full-time driver to get out of their car and just try to get from A to B. It's an eye-opening experience.
I’ve previously done planning work in the Capitol District and there was so much red tape for projects well away from the Hill. I just cannot comprehend how quickly all of the supposed checks and balances have been removed to capitulate to this regime.
This is literal insanity

New AAA study finds that pedestrian detection systems are only 60% effective at night (which is when most pedestrians are struck).

Lesson: Car tech will not "solve" the crisis in US pedestrian safety. Addressing car bloat, deadly street design, etc is also necessary.

I had a conversation with a friend's Dad this weekend about this exact newsletter and its general awfulness.
They've changed the coach; can they change that font? It doesn't match the font on the inside with the championship years.
He’s giving a young 65 though. Honestly had no idea he was that old.

The Carter/Reagan era of austerity did so much damage to America’s state capacity, it’s unreal. HUD, USMTA (now FTA), DOE, the GMENAC report, the freezing of the federal workforce—we just about gave up on solving problems we couldn’t bomb, tax, or credit
Model station designs for both cut and cover and mined! It favors mined-twin tubed stations (a la Crossrail) because of reduced excavation size. The US/MTA habit of mining boxes underground is likely the most expensive way to build a subway station.

Portland is ... right there. It's a real place. People live in it. People can go look at it. You could call someone there right now.

There are real people on the end of these grants. Rust belt autoworkers. Great Plains farmers and roughnecks. Coal communities looking to a new economic future.

It’s genuinely heartbreaking. They don’t have do this — the money is already obligated — but I guess they enjoy destroying lives.
Some additional info on the new list of axed DOE projects circulating.
- All 7 H2 Hubs
- All 13 IRA grants to convert at-risk auto plants to EV mfg
- 11 of 15 grants to speed domestic clean energy mfg in former coal communities
