Shameless Garda PR blitz links road deaths to visibility issues in cases where there is no link
Comment & Analysis: Sadly, I have to start this article by saying, for the avoidance of doubt, nothing in this article says 'don't be visible'. Lights are a legal requirement, and it'd be a good start if the Gardai enforced them, and people walking should take steps to be visible on unlit roads. I get it, nobody likes it when people are walking on unlit roads in the dark without lights and wearing dark clothing, and it's annoying when some cyclists think they are ninjas.

Just as you thought food delivery companies couldn't inflict any more misery on society:

Instead of using lowly-paid gig economy contractors to deliver groceries, they're replacing humans with robots, who, in turn, force humans off the pavement into road traffic.

A legal block on Irish Rail and Northern Ireland Railways signing a contract for new Dublin-Belfast trains has been lifted by the Commercial Court, a division of the High Court. Shovel-ready Luas and Dart projects delayed “to free up funding for more roads”
The Government is delaying shovel-ready public transport projects such as Dart+ South West and Luas Finglas in order "to free up funding for more roads", the Green Party's transport spokesperson, Cllr Feljin Jose, has claimed. He said that this is a "disaster" that large new areas of housing in Dublin -- including a development of nearly 900 homes approved in Adamstown today and the major housing project at Poolbeg -- were being left without the promised transport links, forcing more people into cars on the capital's congested roads.

Today, I saw a driver overtake a stopped bus and plough through a pedestrian crossing. He beeped three times as he sped though. The beeping was to warn people because, as he had overtaken a bus, he had zero visibility of who was about to step out onto the crossing.

But sure, more hi-vis, everyone
👀 Can you see me now?

The importance of visibility on our roads cannot be understated, particularly for vulnerable road users including pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter drivers and motorcyclists.

A person rolled their car into my teenage son a fortnight ago. It was broad daylight and the driver was looking down while their car was rolling forward. I know, because I was yelling, trying to get their attention. Drivers who don't see us are often not looking.
My son hasn't cycled since

Comment & Analysis: "For goodness sake, just leave Skerries ALONE" and "Leave Skerries alone" are common themes from some in the comments section of Facebook posts about the Skerries Active Travel Plan, which this website covered two weeks ago. But in a growing town, what does that really mean? I think it's worth exploring the question, given that it's a common enough feeling expressed when changes are planned in towns and cities around the country (and around the world).

Major public transport projects at risk as Govt priority shifts to roads; funding committed to Galway’s second ring road with “€1bn+” cost
Under pressure from rural TDs supporting it, the Government is shifting its transport spending priorities from sustainable transport to road building -- the funding ratio between public transport and roads is set to change from 2:1 to close to 1:1. Between 2026 and 2030, public transport is expected to get €10.1 billion, while roads is to get €9.7 billion, while active travel and greenways are expected to get €1.8 billion.

Government goes cold on ordering new trains, so 41-year-old Dart fleet — breaking down daily — to keep causing issues for rail network for years
A conservative approach by the Department of Transport to ordering replacement Dart train carriages will lead to increased reliability issues on the Dublin rail network, likely cost the State more when the trains are ordered, and will delay the expansion of other train services, it has been claimed. Earlier this year, the Department of Transport claimed the delay in ordering the trains -- replacements for the existing 41-year-old Dart carriages, which are suffering daily breakdowns and affecting local and intercity services -- was due to a review of the National Development Plan.

In West Cork we have alleged cycling infrastructure that includes shared paths where the mobility path gives way not just to every side road but every private entrance. I saw very similar marking on the great western greenway (though it was better on Achill). Not good enough for 2025.

Comment & Analysis: Kildare County Council is currently proposing the Celbridge Hazelhatch "Mobility Corridor" -- a new road between Celbridge and Hazelhatch, and a link to Irish Rail's Hazelhatch and Celbridge train station, which is to get upgraded with Dart services sometime in the future. Besides housing already in place along part of the road and more housing zoned along it, the road has no bus stops.
