Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

Long thread.

What's your rewrite? "President Trump on Wednesday issued a document claiming he could grant himself powers not granted to him to snatch up federal funds the Constitution grants Congress jurisdiction over, in a move sure to meet with legal challenges."

President Trump on Wednesday signed a memorandum expanding his administration’s authority to repurpose unspent federal funds to pay members of the military during the government shutdown, escalating his challenge to the authority of Congress on spending matters.
Trump Signs Memo Expanding His Authority to Spend Federal Money
The president gave Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wide authority to repurpose funds to pay members of the military without approval from Congress, which has the sole constitutional authority to decide federal spending.

The "color of money" in the federal budget refers to the different categories of funds that are restricted by law to specific purposes, such as procurement, research and development (R&D), or operations and maintenance (O&M).

some colleagues have suggested to me that shame is irrelevant because the people on the "other side" don't know or care what "we" (on whatever "this side") think of them. I have...not gotten that impression

You know, to paraphrase @kenwhite.bsky.social , if you joke about some things, it’s kind of like ‘ironically’ fucking a goat.

Sure, you may say it’s for irony or performance art or to be provocative or whatever, but at the end of the day, you’re still balls deep in a goat.

Q: “Most hospitals + people who will lose insurance are in rural areas. If Trump & Republicans are so intent on sticking it to their own voters, why not let them?”

Hilarious. Trump is sabotaging this guy daily right before the election with his policy pronouncements and all he can do is plead with voters not to notice he’s a Trump ally. I’m sure NJ voters can REALLY count on Jack to stand up to Trump!

Nothing is more indicative of the general idiocy and ignorance of Americans than having them think Republicans are more likely to halt corruption.

I mean seriously, you have to be an imbecile with your head in the sand who follows no legitimate news whatsoever to think that. Astoundingly stupid.

In the last poll before the 2016 election, Trump was losing to Dems on every issue other than anti-corruption — and he won the election.

In 2025, the latest poll shows Republicans leading Dems on who voters trust to halt corruption.

This is an emergency for Democrats ahead of the midterm election.

Republicans hate this idea. They prefer ending democracy and illegally implementing permanent, one-party rule over any form of compromise or letting Americans choose what they want.
