also, let's all give props to Sabretooth, because they've tried to rehabilitate him as a hero multiple times and it never takes, because everybody knows the appeal of Sabretooth is that he is "what if Wolverine was just a total piece of shit"

Produced in 24 hours, done under a punishing deadline, no time to hang about - yet that image IS "The Thing" to me, and to millions of others as well, I suspect. Those images, those compositions, those posters ARE the films, in my head. What a talent. He'll be so missed.

Rest in Peace to the great Drew Struzan, a man whose work sparked the imaginations of a whole generation of movie nerds. The master is gone.

I had the privilege of visiting him in his studio once and getting to talk shop. Here’s his words on one of his masterpieces:

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

Not that anybody comes to me for Maine politics, but the fact that the Democrats successfully convinced a 77yo Governor to primary the 41yo progressive, is today's example of why the Democrats fucking stay failing.

Susan Collins is 72 and if Schumer gets his way, she'll be the YOUNGER choice!

Hello #PortfolioDay

I'm Philip Rice / Spearhafoc. I do a pulp pastiche webcomic called The Apex Society, done in a variety of styles.
Comic book page in a style reminiscent of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon. Closeup of a purple skinned man. A froglike humanoid alien sits on a throne surround by his consorts (of the same species). A Flash Gordon-like hero with red hair poses triumphantly as an Asian woman holds onto him and an old Asian man fiddles with a device behind him. Characters mounted on wolf-horse hybrids approach a scifi city of spires. Cartoony comic book page. A dark skinned man looks at his own reflection in a hand-held piece of shattered glass. A Gordon approaches him from behind.

He's turned to stone as a Popeye-like character punches another Gordon and a man throws a grenade.

An explosion goes off and he see a gun firing at the Gordon that turned the black man to stone. A retro-style comic book page with stylized flat colouring. Wealthy elites at a restaurant gossip about a man and his date, who they claim is a sex worker. Manga style black and white page. Two large warriors with fox tails and elaborate haircuts harass a female fighter pilot. In the background, others of their kind battle ornithopters.

In the second panel, a flying fox-man looks down in shock to see the two warriors from the previous panel stretched out and twisted around each other. The female pilot is also shocked.

And obviously, yes, the easiest way to ensure continuity in policy is having a successor win. But the US hasn't elected a president of the same party as his predecessor since 1988, so at a minimum we should expect lost elections will alter policy trajectory; the degree to which is now "all of it".

This is not to say that elections don't matter; they clearly do, and democracy requires them, and in every case I'd rather my side win than lose. But if I'm working on the question of what to do *while in power*, it's going to be heavily biased towards *how do we ensure electoral defeat isn't fatal*

Now the question in foreign policy for progressives interested in some day governing from the White House again, is how can you do design foreign policy that is resilient to a democracy electing Trumps, or a Farage, or a Le Pen, etc. Internationalism has to be built resilient against those defeats.

There's obviously lots of harms baked into the broader Washington Consensus era of foreign policy, as it guided the Cold War and the immediate decades after. W's wars of choice are real cracks in that, but really Trump detonating JCPOA (the Iran Deal) is what fully destroys the notion of continuity.

Here is an enduring challenge in my field, foreign policy. For decades, there was a broad and bipartisan consensus of US foreign policy abroad, within which presidents would vary. Things like "treaties will be honored" and "basing commitments will last as agreed to by our predecessor", predictable.

Writing is how poor people, as long as they have something to say that continues to be meaningful, can live forever. Rich people too, obviously, but they rarely have that much of interest to say.

Just so everyone is clear, the main issue in the Supreme Court voting rights case tomorrow is whether it's racist against white people to enforce the Voting Rights Act.

I'm dead serious. We live in incredibly stupid times.

Please be conscious if you protest this weekend that there are feds at the protest. They look like you and they sound like you, not like Steve Buscemi in that one clip with the skateboard. Thinking you can spot them is self delusion. Nobody you haven’t met needs to know your last name.

A few called it a Test of Faith. Some said "You need to ALWAYS be ready."

The pastor who picked Sept 23-24 said no, Jesus thought we used the Julian Calendar and it'll be Oct 6-7Not sure what they did after that.

"What will it TAKE to get a reaction out of you?!?!"

"Not hair dye"

Valeria comes in with brown roots.

"It won't work, he is fine with dying your hair.

"I didn't dye it. I used gene therapy to change it to grow in brown."

"You WHAT?!?"

"You win again, little sister."
ragnell.bsky.social
I guess "Those giant robots that target people for a specific gene will now go for your kid and also a telepath is coming by to try and talk you out if homeschooling" is a bit scarier than black hair.
ragnell.bsky.social
"What do you think of my hair, Dad?"

"It's hair."

"You can't even be a LITTLE annoyed?"

"Hm... No. It's just hair."
ragnell.bsky.social
That would be funny. Especially as Reed wouldn't really react to it.
