There's a shocking disparity between how high income and low income earners feel about the economy

Specifically ‘When the Tripods Came’, prequel to the Tripods trilogy by John Christopher.

The world ends up in a tightly controlled hyper-conservative medieval-type serfdom for centuries, with extermination planned.

The aliens’ control is NOT body-snatcher style, but hypnotic and cultish.

This scene is when the main kid starts to realise the ‘baddies’ are regular familiar people who now have steadfast beliefs, unshakable faith.

The ‘caps’ aren’t red with white stitching but… 😬

There’s a line in a book (The Tripods) that’s REALLY stuck with me: aliens are taking over by gradually abducting & hypnotising ppl with special ‘caps’.
A kid sees RAAF jets & is comforted; this military power on our side! Until the jets start shooting each other.

Feels INCREDIBLY apt at the moment
I heard the faint roar and ran across the room. We had a good view, and I saw two fighters sweeping in over the hills beyond Todpole. I forgot being annoyed in the pleasure of looking at them, so fast and beautiful compared with the lumbering Tripod. And they, or planes like them, had smashed the Tripods. What did it matter if a few people were going around in trances, with power like that on our side?
'Fantastic!' I said
'More, over there'
He pointed south. A squadron of three were flying towards the first two. Joining up with them, I guessed. I went on thinking that until the rockets started to ex-plode. It didn't last long. One of the two burst into a blossom of orange and red, and the other roared off to the west with the three attackers banking to pursue it.
I said in a whisper, 'What's that about?' But I knew. All five had been Harriers, with air force markings. Which of the sides was Capped and which free I'd no idea, but one thing was certain: military power was divided now, between them and us.

Humans have made this software (however flawed) and other humans have made screenshotted guides for it.

But let’s ask a statistical tool twisted into a conversational daydream machine to explain it instead

Coworker then tried to prompt chatgpt to bring up the same instructions as before. It did not.

Coworker: oh i found a trick in excel for what you were doing. You can ask chatgpt about it
Me: oh cool what is it?
Coworker: I can’t remember, but you can ask chatgpt
Me: oh ok - well thanks I’ll do a search and find a guide
Coworker: chatgpt can show you. It’s… in the menu with… I can’t remember

“Gotta find a hypnooootiiiiist”

(Also omg at the 1 min mark he’s *not* saying ‘bonjour’, but ‘wash away’?! In my defence lyrics were harder to work out back then 🤣)

Look I’ll admit it is the dream, however all of those big cats will, at some point, stand right on them

RIP Drew Struzan - a man whose talent and imagination etched onto so many minds throughout the last 40+ years.

His art & posters are some of the first visuals I think of when I think about cinema - an invitation to watch these stories and worlds.

A massive loss 💔

Fascist propaganda works by showing strength, not promising improvements in your life or any ethical appeal. Pure ad baculum

This is why the inflatable costumes works so well -- it works the same way calling them "weird" or "creepy" did. It disrupts their narrative, and makes them seem pathetic rather than cool-and-cruel.

You need to see this:

Both sides of a conflict are calling each other evil and corrupt, rendering me, a humble journalist, helpless to discern the truth. Best I can do is let you know that both sides are in fact saying those things. Hope this helps

I was brought up believing in a god who *could* absolve, but *only* if I was contrite enough, which I was terrified I wouldn’t be.

As an adult I decided, fuck that. That’s not love.

But then that means loving oneself. Which isn’t as easy as it sounds! But you deserve to be loved by you ❤️
