“From the 1950s to the 1970s, federal contractors building the system deliberately mapped routes that rammed through and dismantled Black neighborhoods — payback, some say, for gains made during the Civil Rights Movement.”
Why Do Highways Run Through Black Neighborhoods?
The documentary “Interstate” exposes how highway routes are by design.

this has to be coupled with the things that *don’t* count as a scandal: an array of harassment allegations, covering up Covid deaths, staying in a race after losing the primary, etc.
i cannot believe that “mamdani calls a close adult relative an ‘aunt’ even if they are not literally their parent’s sister” is what counts as a “scandal” these days

Jesus Christ my pta wants to help families who are losing SNAP benefits and I said ok let’s raise money went give gift cards to the families.

But no that’s too simple a solution. They want to assemble food baskets and send them home with 7 year olds.

I can’t deal with white people today.

I think what the Mamdani's-dad's-cousin-is-his-aunt non-story reveals about white sociopolitics writ large is not merely that they will turn anything into an opportunity to distrust a person of colour, but "extended 'family'" is anathema to a certain flavour of whiteness, out of ignorance or spite.
And the moral of the story is fuck the police.

I’m finding it harder and harder to care about the day-to-day events on social media as the big picture from the headlines becomes more and more clear that we have rapidly descended into an authoritarian surveillance state where all that matters anymore is ground-level community solidarity.

Many seem to think #disabled people "should just work", but they don't understand/care that:

1. Workplaces systemically discriminate against us

2. We're often paid less than the non-disabled

3. Accommodations that would enable us to work are often denied

and it makes me mad.

Something that makes me angry is that we can't capitalize SNAP. I see good people using their modest means to try to feed the starving ppl of Gaza, while the US spends tens of billions bombing them. Now we are trying to feed each other, while the US steals from us. Same with GoFundMe healthcare.

What we're witnessing with #Melissa is ultra rare in the history of known hurricanes in the Atlantic. This level of sustained intensity and feasting on every joule of ocean heat content without any real disruption is incredible.

Not hyperbole: Jamaica is facing a generational catastrophic event.
