if that works and modifies the link markup with the slug in the URL, you're moving in the right direction, but you'll likely need a couple more things to get the appropriate URLs for each category

get_the_category()[0]->slug will get you the slug for the first (and, in your case, only) item in the array

what you've got there returns an array of WP_Terms — which is why the generated markup looks like nothing was returned

you'll need to get at the contents of that returned array to get anything useful

get_the_category()[0] will get you the first item in the array

is there any reason you can't / don't want to use something like get_the_category() to get the ID of the current post and then a WP_Query to fetch the IDs (or slugs, etc.) for the oldest and newest posts within it?
