To note very bluntly my view of the next span of years, I will quote Neville Chamberlain: "It is the evil things we fight against, brute force, bad faith, injustice, oppression, and persecution and against them I am confident the right will prevail."

It's astounding how JD Vance takes every opportunity to be the absolute worst possible human being he can be.
Tweet from JD Vance: "The president told me he did this on Indigenous Peoples Day in honor of you."

It's the exact equivalent of being mad at NASA for telling you that your idea about Mars being closer than we thought is wrong, and then acting vindicated when you run into an asteroid on your otherwise-doomed voyage into space.

And he really was a moron, because the Ancient Greeks were able to calculate the circumference of the Earth to within 4,000 miles of the actual thing by abstract math alone. Columbus said Eratosthenes was wrong and he....wasn't.
patrickwyman.bsky.social
My favorite aspect of the Columbus legend is him getting rejected by the Portuguese gets spun as them not recognizing the genius of his idea. No - he went into a roomful of expert navigators and made basic math mistakes, they thought he was a moron, and they wouldn't fund his idea on that basis.

My neighborhood has two FB groups because one is so conservative and right wing that people created another one to get news with less annoying comments.

Since last week, both groups are posting 80% ICE sightings and organizing rapid response.
lumberjackwharfie.bsky.social
soooo my Chicagoans, has anyone else's neighborhood facebook group gone from desperately apolitical (regarding federal politics) to at least 40% about ICE/DHS activity and organizing against it? like it's hard to overstate this shift

Rare moment of journalist solidarity as major news outlets, including WaPo, NYT, CNN, Newsmax, The Atlantic, the Wall Street Journal, NPR, Reuters and the Guardian, along with the trade publications Task & Purpose and Breaking Defense, all reject new Pentagon reporting rules (no word from Fox yet)
News outlets broadly reject Pentagon rules before signing deadline
The Washington Post and other major news outlets have refused to sign the Defense Department’s restrictive new media policy, citing First Amendment concerns.

And that's perfectly fair, with the logic of it sound, it's just a note people should remember that Nazi Germany itself rose out of a multi-party system held together by a liberal coalition but undone by extremes. Weimar *is* relevant in a lot of ways of how not to do democracy.
metabluesky.bsky.social
*Weimar Germany, not the Nazis. The Nazis, the KPD, the SPD, the Catholic Center Party, the DNVP, and the DPP.
metabluesky.bsky.social
While this is true, the other side of it is that Nazi Germany had six political parties and the late-stage Tsarist Duma had five. It mitigates risk, and it can also create very different ones. There's no silver bullet to fix the evils of the human soul.
figgityfigs.bsky.social
The thing that multi-partyism would bring, I think, is the ability for people to maintain their partisan commitment while allowing their whole party to shift to a different coalition. If opposing authoritarianism becomes the paramount project, all of the relevant parties can align on that.

figgityfigs.bsky.social
I think this is absolutely true, and the other piece of it is that we need some way to make this sense stronger than base partisanship. And that’s where I’ve come around to multi-partyism, which @kjephd.bsky.social has been pushing for some time and which I didn’t much see the value of before.
kjephd.bsky.social
You need to build a common sense that this stuff is Not Okay, & that extraordinary responses are therefore required. That common sense should pervade the guardrails (my phone keeps suggesting "guardians" which is apposite) & be a necessary qualification for staffing them.

Based on what Rick Perlstein posted from the Israeli Defense Minister it hasn't even lasted 24 hours.
metabluesky.bsky.social
Yeah, bud, Netanyahu literally got the President he wanted, the guy demanding Israel to finish the job and do a final solution of the Palestinian problem. You just don't care what Donald Trump says and outright lie about what he said because you don't consider it genocide if a Republican does it.
metabluesky.bsky.social
The claim that Trump did something Biden didn't and defended Palestinian lives when he demanded their wholesale deportation and/or extermination being conflated with defending Biden as opposed to outright lying about things everyone saw is certainly a choice.
metabluesky.bsky.social
And how is that a lie given the conduct of the Gang of Six to decide that Trump is a demigod with unconstrained powers and Biden was not to be allowed any meaningful exercise of them?

The most outrageous thing Hasan Piker did was a few weeks ago when he casually streamed the addresses of half of all Liberal influencers to his audience of vicious communist goons. Including the address of a friend of mine, who's a journalist working from the frontline in Ukraine.

Didn't he bring on a literal Houthi terrorist onto his stream and glaze him like the kid is fucking Jesus?
metabluesky.bsky.social
So will the people who glazed Trump as ending the war admit they were wrong or credit him with the bloodshed that follows as opposed to blaming Biden for it? Well we all know that answer, don't we?

This is Israel's defense minister. Just to be clear: Israel interprets the deal allowing continueing the violence even after the freeing of the hostages.

know what's kind of weird? common core's been around for so long now that it's successfully disrupted a long tradition (in some cases inertia, no doubt) of teaching books in schools and it's necessary to make cases for why we should do that again

I mean they've been salivating at the bit to do Sicario so if Mexico's general staff isn't having some serious talks and quietly reaching out to people with heft they're on par with the Santa Anna age army.

"One of the Mexican officials stressed that while the government did not see unilateral American strikes inside Mexico as an immediate threat, the U.S. strikes in the Caribbean posed a long-term concern."

US strikes in the Caribbean function as coercive signaling.

There is a reason for that saying 'uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.' Constitutional monarchy defanged 'son has dad strangled, uncle stabs nephew and blames it on the peasants' as a fact of life.

yeah, this becomes clear when you watch things like costume dramas about royalty in historical europe and asia. life of material comfort but constant psychological terror

As someone born into a similar context (to a much lesser degree) and abused myself, in different ways, the thing I want people to realise is that wealth shields these families from consequences if they abuse their children, which is why so many of these people come out fucked up,

It frustrates me when people act as if being born wealthy is some kind of stain that makes you inherently evil when so much of the time I look at stories like this and realize that these "rich kids" are often victims of horrific child abuse who sometimes become villains by giving into that pain
metabluesky.bsky.social
Correct. And it literally ignores that Trump was trying to incite Netanyahu on and giving him a blank check to do it. The sheer shamelessness in that exposes the lie in all the pretended concern about Palestinians before it and that it was pretense.
politiburb.bsky.social
I can already tell that "Trump may have been evil but he stopped a genocide Biden wouldn't!" is going to become an article of faith for the worst leftists alive for the next 70 fucking years or so, so I'm going to be clear. If you believe this, show yourself now so you can be blocked in advance.
