Enough new folks here that it’s time for a pinned intro:

I like to post about David Lynch movies, Alan Moore comics, AEW, Columbo, video games that everybody finished years ago, 90s sketch comedy, and collectible screenprints.

I don’t like to talk about politics, but I seem to do it a whole lot.

Alt: a man and woman are sitting at a table with the words " oh hello " on the top - the preceding was the auto generated description and it rules (this is George St Geegland and Gil Faizon, charmed I’m sure)

This is something I thought about a lot when I was covering politics in Idaho, a huge factor in the GOP there getting pushed so far right was they ran for precinct committeeman seats no one was paying attention to. No reason people who want to change the Democratic Party can’t do the same thing.

like a lot of you, I’ve been trying to spend less on Amazon, but you should know that all of the Looney Tunes Platinum Collection blus are under $20 each right now

The increasing move towards distrust of all intellectuals has really done a number on "smart" characters in superhero comics (Xavier, Reed, Beast) and unfortunately it extends to the real world as well

Sad news everyone, I’m officially pulling the plug on Brightsiders, my super fan podcast for the 2017 movie Bright. I still feel like there were many interesting topics left to discuss but after 7 years of weekly episodes I’ve learned that no one has ever listened to the show.

You're living through one of the biggest technological transformations in world history and it has nothing to do with AI

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

One of the three women comics performing at the Riyadh Comedy Festival
"Comedians did not sign up to be your hero. It’s our job to be irreverent and dangerous, to question authority and take you through a spooky mental haunted house so you can arrive at your own conclusions. Stay focused on the people we pay taxes to to be moral leaders." - Whitney Cummings, tweet from Feb 6, 2022

cosplayers in giant costumes constantly stopping in the aisles for pics, blocking congoers views/access to tables? not sure why pros being glad that's dialed back is "odd"
comixace.bsky.social
So the big story out of #nycc on some levels is moving the cosplayers down to a lower floor. They are very unhappy while pros love having a giant well lit space to cavort in. Oddly enough there is very little sympathy for cosplayers from professionals.

These guys are terrified of the numbers that are going to turn out on Saturday, and that's all the more reason to put down your "wine mom protest" objections and join them.

Happy Columbo's Day! Celebrate by doing one more thing on your personal to-do list, even if that thing is just watching your favorite episode.

Listen to the response to this and look how easy it is to say it.

We have armed secret police kidnapping people off the street based on the color of their skin.

When we win: we will haul them before a Senate committee. The masks will come off. There will be consequences.

It’s doubly embarrassing to be incapable of writing coherently on Watchmen when off your face on drugs given that Alan Moore is, in point of fact, routinely off his face on drugs.

backmatter from Watchmen. it’s a transcript of an interview with teenage Rorschach

I don’t disagree with any of that, but I don’t think the book works the way it’s supposed to if he doesn’t have nominally “heroic” motives. He’s an antihero where the “anti” just does a lot more heavy lifting.

you know who thinks somebody who takes Veidt-like actions, sacrificing a horrific number of lives to save countless more, is heroic?

(this should in no way be read as “ya gotta hand it to Peter Thiel,” because what the fuck is he talking about with the ‘one world government’)
mattmiller.bsky.social
i dunno, i think one has to reckon with the fact that Veidt’s plan does, in fact, avert a nuclear war that the comic does everything in its power to present as inevitable

It’s very funny to see him say this about Ozymandias, maybe the only character in Watchmen who can’t be correctly described as an antihero
