Not sure how I got 500 followers already but…hi! I’m the @unseenjapan.com guy. This account is mostly about cool things I’m doing (or eating) around Japan plus pontification on publishing and politics.

TIL that 4545 in Japanese is slang for masturbating/fapping (b/c it’s pronounced like the slang word シコシコ) .

Example sentence: “Looks like over 300 people jerked it overnight to my homemade porn”

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

ICE secretly kidnap autistic boy during bathroom break—never notify parents.

Mother reported him missing a week ago—turns out ICE had him detained the whole time.

He was helping sell fruit and asked to go to the restroom—by the time she was done helping a customer he was gone.

if you listen to metal then you know that "heavy metal fan with firm views on foreigners" is the same kind of heavy metal fan with a pronounced interest in "heritage"

Is "firm views" the new way to say "xenophobic"?

@gaiaslastlaugh.bsky.social Immigration in Japan appears to get stricter at least in the Tokyo Immigration Bureau office.

Of course we can’t rule out the possibility that more people just hadn’t done the paperwork properly, but it’s easy to see why some non-Japanese people would feel scared.

Also no inkling in this headline that the Komeito/LDP alliance just blew up this am and her election isn't anywhere near a sure thing. Just straight up whitewashing

I'm so tired of being my own hype person, I'm tired of having to do it on sites where the owners hate their userbase. Or sites built to stoke rage to keep interactions up. I'm just so tired. I just wanna make comics that ppl enjoy & not worry every day about making an income & bills. Please.

Japan has also been making a lot of great strides in the past two decades on LGBTQ recognition and cracking down on workplace sexism. Still a long way to go but solid progress that I now fear may start to be undone…

“Dear Stranger” follows a Japanese husband and a Taiwanese-American wife, in a New York-set tale of intrigue that wields the awkward intricacies of English as a 2nd (or 3rd) language to enhance its drama. Also, Hidetoshi Nishijima drives his car. #BIFF2025 joysauce.com/dear-strange...

Unless Takaichi as LDP leader can show a side of herself that's never been apparent in her career to date, this is going to be a disaster. Lots of very glum faces among the senior LDP faces up on stage right now; they no doubt suspect that the turkeys just voted for Christmas.
