I'm happy to announce that we've just published a Casebook on Chinese Outbound Investment: Law, Policy, and Business (CUP 2025).

Given the US's retreat from overseas development, the future of international development looks very Chinese. We need to understand what this means.

An excellent analysis of recent events.
1/10 🧵 The U.S. just captured a sitting head of state in a military operation—and Trump says the U.S. will "run" Venezuela “for now.” Whatever you think of Maduro, this is the most consequential unilateral move in the hemisphere since Panama (1989).

Looks awesome. Congratulations!

Stay pro-active and engaged in 2026. Democracy is an active verb and requires doing.
The most common question I receive is how everyday citizens can help in the fight for democracy. My advice, take the first step, start with something small and see what works for you. Here are ten things all of us can do. www.democracydocket.com/opinion/10-t...

Very sorry to hear of Bill’s passing. He was a true scholar and a gentleman. He took the time to get to know junior scholars and gave them a boost through his colloquium. He had a gentle manner but a fierce intellect. Rest in peace.

AS A PROFESSOR, I AM ASKING

HOW ARE OUR STUDENTS SUPPOSED TO LEARN IN THESE CONDITIONS?

HOW ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO GO TO SCHOOL AND TAKE EXAMS KNOWING SOMEONE MIGHT JUST SHOW UP WITH AN EASY TO ACQUIRE AUTOMATIC WEAPON?

HOW??????????
Longer statement from Brown University:

"We are very sorry to share that we have confirmed reports of multiple shooting victims, but we are not able to share their condition. They have been transported to local hospitals."

ICE raided Augsburg University in Minnesota and allegedly pointed guns at students.

They didn’t have a warrant to be on private property, and students are shaken and left feeling unsafe.

At least one was detained.

They’re not going after criminals.

They’re grabbing anyone they can.

I’m never watching “Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot!” again.

Congratulations, @josephtorigian.bsky.social!

“We are the problem.”

Absolutely agree.

And the thing is - we can do something about that.

Act now.

Petition. Protest. Teach. Write. Voice.

A win for our judicial system.

On Nov. 14 & 15, I was fortunate to attend a special conference to honor the life & works of Professor Frank Upham of NYU Law School who is retiring. Frank’s approach to understanding the relationships b/w law, politics, & ideology in comparative & socio-legal studies has left a profound legacy.

Looking forward to returning to the #AmericanAnthropologicalAssociation annual meeting after about a 10-year hiatus. If there was ever a time to think outside the box, this is it, and anthros are trained to do exactly that.

Excited to participate in these 2 China legal anthro events.

Sorry to hear this, @lauratmurphy.bsky.social. Let me know if you come to DC. Would be great to have you speak to my class.

Hope.
#BREAKING: In the Illinois National Guard case, #SCOTUS is asking for additional briefing on one of the key substantive questions (and one flagged by my Georgetown colleague @martylederman.bsky.social in an amicus brief):

Among other things, this means no ruling until *at least* the week of 11/17.
