This thread is really interesting and has huge implications for New Orleans. Currently, Trump can’t occupy the city with troops under Gov. Clownfish’s request. That’s because national guard can’t be deployed without pay — and the mechanism they used puts the feds on the hook to pay them.

Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

My dad, surprised, practically yells, "A KNIFE??? Where's your mace??" at which security officials said, "Yeah, where IS that mace? Hand it over." I was so mad at him. Mom got me that! I walked off in a huff with Dad asking what he'd done. Ugh, no clue. Daaaaaaad.

This is pre-9/11 airport security at a small city airport, when they weren't as strict about searching everyone's stuff and unticketed passengers were allowed at the gates to see travelers off. I was taking items out of my pockets, one of which was a small pocket knife my boyfriend gave me.
