I highly recommend growing up with the medics for anyone, because it very clearly disabused me of the Cult of Action / Heroic mythology that the left masturbates over sometimes.

You know what’s fucking cool? Infrastructure. Competency. Efficacy at whatever scale you can impact.

There’s a kind of baseline FPS subculture that exists outside of any specific game, and over time the vibe that made me fall in love with Overwatch was terraformed into saminess. I’d argue that popularity and competitiveness in esports doomed it just as much as blizzards long term mismanagement.

It was such a breath of fresh air at first, the cartoony-ness of it and game design ethos made it feel refreshingly friendly. That friendliness contributed to an overall contrast in behavioral toxicity compared to other FPSs. Couple that with the influx of women and it was briefly paradise.
