"they've always been like this" is always a tempting savvy take but it is just not true that Republican staffers were 100 percent open Nazis back in 2004, or hell even 2014. they just weren't
michaelcaley.bsky.social
there have been a lot of responses to this arguing that young Republicans were motivated by such feelings but didn't express them openly

and I think a crucial lesson of the Trump era is that there is great value in people not expressing these things openly! that's a big and decisive change!

For those tempted to say Young Republicans have always been this way, they really have not. When I worked on campus and did bipartisan college events after, they were very much not like this.

That’s why groups like YCT and eventually TPUSA formed — because Young Republicans weren’t radical enough.

Exodus 8:2-6
"But if you refuse to let them go, I will plague your whole country with frogs...
The frogs shall come up on you and on your people and on all your officials."

personally i think shouting into the void is probably a frightening experience for the void. maybe that’s why the void won’t answer back and you’re all alone? just a thought

I will never forgive Taylor Swift for trying to rebrand kandi as family-friendly "friendship bracelets", permanently cross-pollinating searches and online communities based around both types of accessories.

They're really trying "let them drink coffee" huh
graay.bsky.social
I say this as a tea drinker who does a fucking gong fu tea ceremony most mornings --

Coffee people are scary as hell. This has the potential to get real bad.

Tariffs have rapidly increased the price of coffee—a drink with almost no nutritional value and lots of functional substitutes. Yet coffee may also be the one thing Americans can’t live without, @elcush.bsky.social writes:
The Drink That Americans Won’t Give Up Without a Fight
Coffee has almost no nutritional value and lots of substitutes. It’s also, apparently, too important to lose.

I think a lot of people don't quite grasp how little documentation of a legal identity anyone had before, like, the 1930s. No social security number, no green card, no driver's license. This made you reliant on your social network; OTOH nobody could force you to write your name a certain way.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is better understood as a gothic horror novel about the horrors of parent-child incest with science fiction elements than its more popular interpretation as a science fiction novel about the hubris of creating life with gothic horror elements.

To truly understand the genius of Moby Dick, one must have all the scholarship of a fujoshi.
graay.bsky.social
Oh Frankenstein is undeniably extremely horny. I would even go so far as to say the main conflict is being forced to trade socially abhorred homosexual desire for socially approved incest which is a take others may think of as unhinged but I'm sure is normal and correct.

An excellent take actually

When we don't like a book we always complain about bad writers, but there's bad readers too
graay.bsky.social
Truly unhinged opinion: many classic novels would be improved by a laugh track.

To truly unhinge this opinion: maybe what people need to truly understand Moby Dick these days is a laugh track. They need permission to giggle at the "sperm" chapter. Without a cue they don't understand that they're supposed to anymore.

"ThErE aRe tOo mAnY DiGrEsSiOnS aBoUt wHaLeS" yeah I love when I go to the comedy club and hear the set and the guy just gets straight to the point without any digressions. I am not listening to the stand up comedian to waste my time. Get to the point already. This is how these people sound. Oy.
graay.bsky.social
Too hinged, maybe. I gotta figure out a better one.
graay.bsky.social
Moby Dick makes a much better audiobook than text because it makes it easier to appreciate what it is -- an extremely long, whale-themed standup routine.
