My new research is out

"A Case Definition of a New Disease: A Review of the US Working Definition (USG) and 2024 NASEM Definition for Long COVID"

I use two US #LongCovid case definitions as case studies for a broader discussion of SARS-CoV-2 sequelae

Especially because the anchors mentioned she was ill more than once over a few months

In the interviews I personally saw with Lollobrigida, she just spoke of a viral infection

I wondered the same, of course

I presume not all details were passed to journalists. The newspaper Repubblica said a repeated bout of mononucleosis, the anchor on Skysport Italy said likely mononucleosis with ups and downs. Maybe the athlete was in part private which is fully understandable

My solidarity. The whole situation is a public health failure

Here's the latest variant picture for the United States, to mid-January.

The XFG.* "Stratus" variant continued it’s dominance, but fell to 71% frequency.

NB.1.8.1 "Nimbus" grew to 15%.

Tennis star Gael Monfils has withdrawn from the Rio Open tournament because of a debilitating viral infection

Lollobrigida is also a mother and missed an entire sport season before her fight with a virus this season, to have her child. My congratulations to Francesca Lollobrigida on her gold at Milano Cortina 2026

"It was the most difficult season of my life. Being here at the Olympics was already a victory. I just wanted to have fun" Lollobrigida live today on Skyport Italy after winning gold (the anchor mentioned multiple bouts of a viral infection, likely mononucleosis to him.)

While Francesca Lollobrigida's experience had so far an happy ending, we must remember all those who don't recover from viral infections and remain ill, or severely disabled. Care, research, prevention and the quest for treatments are key (Summary and translation by myself from the original sources)

Because of the infection (apparently mononucleosis), Lollobrigida suffered from poor form across the season, struggled with her performances, considered retiring and didn't consider herself a contender for the Olympic gold

According to the press (e.g. Repubblica) in Italy the viral infection Lollobrigida suffered from would be another bout of mononucleosis (EBV infection) (ricaduta di mononucleosi). She was particularly affected in late 2025.

"I was thinking about another kind of preparation [for the Olympics because a viral infection affected me]. I chose to fight." Lollobrigida said in late January 2026 after struggling with form. Lollobrigida was to win (today) the Olympic gold in speed skating

"[I thought I was not going to make it to the Olympics]. My body wasn't responding, my head was breaking down.. I had forgotten why I skate [after the viral infection]. Then I remembered I skate because I love skating.. I thank everyone who supported me"

Gold medallist Francesca Lollobrigida, 35, had opened up about her difficult approach to the Winter Olympics days ago: "I had a viral infection in the key months of preparation. [I thought to quit]. Sport is not just about winning. It's also about losing, falling down, doubting yourself."

My body wasn't responding. I was scared, I cried, I thought to quit sport"

Italy's speed skater Francesca Lollobrigida, who won gold today at the Winter Olympics, suffered for months for the effects of a viral infection, possibly mononucleosis

Olympians are masking up with N95s because they know a covid infection can derail their chances of competing.

They know it could derail their careers.

They know it could disable them.

They’re practicing self care and community care.

Give them a gold medal in public health!
