I presume not all details were passed to journalists. The newspaper Repubblica said a repeated bout of mononucleosis, the anchor on Skysport Italy said likely mononucleosis with ups and downs. Maybe the athlete was in part private which is fully understandable

While Francesca Lollobrigida's experience had so far an happy ending, we must remember all those who don't recover from viral infections and remain ill, or severely disabled. According to the press (e.g. Repubblica) in Italy the viral infection Lollobrigida suffered from would be another bout of mononucleosis (EBV infection) (ricaduta di mononucleosi). She was particularly affected in late 2025.

They know it could derail their careers.

They know it could disable them.

They’re practicing self care and community care.

Give them a gold medal in public health!
