POSTER: In my post I invented the Don’t Misunderstand the Torment Nexus Metaphor as a cautionary tale

CTO: At long last, I have misunderstood the Torment Nexus Metaphor from the classic post Don't Misunderstand The Torment Nexus Metaphor
"Torment Nexus" comes from this tweet and is often used now to describe the kind of negative experiences you can have with social networks, like getting dogpiled or harassed or being pushed into conflict

Interesting paper! When you ask people about the most important issue "facing the country," they often say immigration. But when you ask them about issues facing them personally, it doesn't crack the top 10.

This indicates that voters are reacting to media narratives, not their own experience.

Got some very weird work coming up, so I'm building a system to convert Metahuman heads to low-poly assets with baked lighting and texture data. From there I'll clean up and paint over the textures by hand to add characterization and such

Doing some real sicko shit and it's deeply pleasing

Microsoft is now warning investors about the pushback against its massive data centers.

The tech giant's latest earnings reports says: “We also face community opposition, local moratoriums and hyper-local dissent that may impede or delay infrastructure development."

Here's an update on my small-voxel renderer, inspired by the look of games like Doom and Quake. The work I shared last year focused on handling simpler environment geometry. Since then, I've greatly expanded the scope of what I can depict in this art style. More info in thread.

This is sometimes read as "look 'AI' isn't working". But the opposite is true.

_This_ is what "AI" is _for_. Push down labor power, push down wages, make employment more insecure.

I just started playing this (finally)! I didn't know that they came from theatre. That's awesome!

was just reminded of an old great thread on Doomworld: the Doom level progress diagram. it was created to address the age old question about when a map should be considered linear or non-linear www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/...
God, I feel like the art style of this game is going to prove to be absolutely timeless. So excellent.

i think this usefully focuses on some neglected aspects within the discussion: we exist in an economic context, and LLMs are products with a specific, non-neutral shape and context, which have been significantly overhyped and which have safeguards significantly underimplemented.
“Relying on chatbots isn’t fringe — it’s the predictable result of care made scarce, stigmatized, and costly. Recognizing that doesn’t mean uncritically embracing chatbot care, but it’s past time to name what’s happening: Privately owned chatbots are functioning as public health resources.”
‘AI psychosis’ discussions ignore a bigger problem with chatbots
Don’t frame chatbot failures as human “insanity.”

My lukewarm take is that Video Games are broadly miscategorized as descendant from Film, when in fact they are much, much closer to the deep roots of Theatre. Or, more correctly, they grow from the same root of "Play" as Theatre & Sport; Film is actually a distant cousin later down the line.
love @mackeza.bsky.social on participatory video-game play + i love the idea of a "video game book club". have been thinking a lot about how we can bring video games into real-world social circumstances, gentle or raucous crowd participation, allowing social discovery. i want new event formats!

In retrospect, the time to fight back was when the tech industry started using us to train LLMs by making CAPTCHAs ubiquitous and required.

I miss the office as a social hangout but I dont miss the bullying & gaslighting, dont miss eating lunch alone while watching groups of men who never seem to invite a she/her colleague along go get food together, don't miss the office dick loudly saying edgy jokes that are practically approved by HR
Those parts were great.

It's the moving every two years, the 3 hours commuting every day, the nanny manager that I don't miss. And the daily covid risk that I don't want to sign up for.
Unpopular Opinion:
I do miss going into the office for work, having my own desk, chatting with colleagues with our daily little updates, going out for lunch, knowing the beat of what's going on with the project and the company, communicating in person. The stability of it all.

Always thought it was sad that Ayn Rand—one of the most successful authors of children's fantasy books of all time—had little enough saved in the bank in her old age that she had to rely on public assistance until her death, but I'm glad it was there for her.
