MMWR stole the show in the first round of headlines about CDC cuts but in the chaos, many missed that the NHANES mobile team remains RIF'd. This is the backbone of this key survey that contains some of the only representative anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and dietary data on the country.

Protecting the nation’s public health demands data, whether it be new measles cases, a surge in ER visits, or shifting patterns in obesity. The most recent job cuts at the CDC threaten the mostly unseen foundation of that research enterprise.

CDC team running top survey on health and nutrition is laid off
NHANES has collected data on eating patterns, diabetes and other common diseases for decades. The CDC team that runs it has been fired.

How many trillions of dollars have swung based on the words of two men, Trump and Powell? The market seems to be fundamentally unserious and unmoored from actual economic productivity.

My wish for women on this year’s Econ job market is that you keep your options wide open. There are lots of great opportunities to have a big impact out on the world, and you have valuable skills that many employers would pay dearly for.

Pfizer and now AstraZeneca struck deals with the White House to provide "most-favored nation" pricing in Medicaid. But as USC Schaeffer’s Darius Lakdawalla explains to @cbsnews.com, the effect may be small since Medicaid already gets the “best price” by law.
Trump unveils deal for AstraZeneca to cut Medicaid drug prices and join "TrumpRx" site
Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca will offer U.S. patients discounted prices for some drugs, President Trump announced Friday, the second major drug company to strike a deal with the administration.

Starting a PhD can feel like stepping into uncharted territory. Although universities offer orientation programmes and guidance, some of the most valuable lessons come from those who’ve walked the path before.

It's finally happened. This is the first set of Nobel laureates that I've never (to my knowledge) read a word of. I think this means I'm old (and in a niche field).

There's a perception (borne out by stats) that he can't win against top teams. It's become an expectation - and recruitment is based on expectations. What boggles my mind is that we're spending almost $50 million to lose a coach when we're closing 7 campuses and maybe our public TV/radio station.

I think your payout is $25 million. Couldn't we have tried a swap?

There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

1. My father's funeral was this week. This morning, I attended my first @nihvigils.bsky.social with my family. I shared my father's story. My father immigrated from South Korea. This was possible with #NSF funding. I know we are sister agencies, but science is under attack in multiple departments.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your father sounds like he was an amazing person. Thank you for sharing this story.

It's clearer by the day that Columbia making a deal with Trump in July was a catastrophe for higher education as a whole. It gave terrible people a bottomless appetite for extortion. The other eight universities must follow MIT's lead.

BREAKING: Look at this.

A new crypto account was opened yesterday morning.

30 minutes BEFORE Trump's announcement of 100% tariffs on China, it added a huge multi-million dollar levered Bitcoin short position, per YF.

The market dumped.

The trader made +$192 million in two hours.

Unusual.

Also, everything bagels are kind of bad.

Milwaukee, 43 years ago today
By Paul G. Hayes of The Journal Staff
Milwaukee burst with unrestrained joy Sunday night because its baseball team had brought home the American League pennant.
It was a party unmatched in the memories. that large fraction of people 25 years old and younger who attended.
For happiness, its nearest rival was 25 years ago, a party for the world champion Milwaukee Braves. For public affection, you had to go back to the end of World War II. For drinking, it might have surpassed Milwaukee's celebration of the end of Prohibition.
