In case you’re hearing about the “protest that turned violent” in Boston last week, here’s the “violence” in question, per the police report
Following the protest, four officers were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries. One officer had a broken nose and had his glasses broken, another was treated for pepper spray exposure, one sustained a finger injury while handcuffing and another sustained a lower back injury attempting to make an arrest.

"To this end its social services weren’t offered out of a genuine effort to help those in need, but as a tool of control."
From its founding the Salvation Army’s mission was to harass the poor, punish the marginalized and coerce conversions. They weren’t shy about this. Founder William Booth declared the group’s purpose was to crush the “Three As,” which were “Alcohol, Atheism and Anarchy” and stop the spread of unions and socialist groups fighting for change. In its place they pushed a reactionary version of Christianity that defended capitalism and derided the poor and marginalized as in need of their brand of militant “salvation.”

From what I learned (also from private school) - the flip side of this is also meaningful.

The presumption of guilt and punishment enacted by the powerful does not mean one is guilty.

It means simply that one has been deemed an outsider.

And outsiders lose.

Sorry went to private school and seeing too much of this

The presumption of innocence and grace granted by enablers isn’t empathy

It’s moral self indulgence at the expense of others

Before "local governments are powerless over police" spreads too much: no, they're not.

They may clash sometimes, and cops may arm-twist individual politicians, but local governments have *a lot* of sway over cops.

If they're not reining them in it's because they don't want to.
davidforbes.bsky.social
Worth a repeat.
davidforbes.bsky.social
Local governments, and the gentry who control them, do not arm, pay and equip local police because they're afraid of them. They do it because they're afraid of the public. Cops are a useful, if sometimes unruly, force for maintaining their power.

They were shouting "fund the police" for a reason.

So, at this point, the idea is that “defund was bad,” but the police are “unaccountable,” and it’s simply not fair to expect elected officials to address this because the police are scary.

I don’t understand this as an argument against confrontation. They volunteered to take on a job that, by definition, involves some tough choices and personal risk. As a result they’re paid well and given a lot of social status, we can’t turn around and say “well, actually, it’s too risky for them”

The liberal elite delusion that police are broadly on the side of truth and justice has put us all in existential danger.

It is imperative that you do not depend on the police to help you or take our side during clashes with the fascist Federals.

Police see a protest and know that they hate every person in that protest. It doesn't matter what it's for or who you are - they know their job is to smash you.

Troopers just violently attacked protesters, tackled several, several arrests, shoving activists and press with batons.

A small number of demonstrators attempted to protest/march in the street.

Massive number of ISP troopers in riot gear responded by blocking 25th, threatening arrest, shouting into megaphone about an unlawful assembly.

As the Salvation Army's enabling of ICE is drawing more attention to them, read our piece on their long record of anti-queer/trans hatred, classism and abuse of the poor.

A quick reminder: The Salvation Army is an international organisation and the national branches are not administratively or financially independent. Australian Salvos may be (usually) less overt in, or better at getting away with, the fascism they do, but if you support them then you support US ICE.

I'm sorry your non-Trump Nobel winner turned up to be a Trump-humping authoritarian, but you're only making yourself look worse by trying to rehabilitate her shit takes.🤷‍♀️

This is — along with many, many other reasons — why politicians should never be seen as saviors.
chadstanton.blacksky.app
Pritzker should be held responsible for the police nominally under his control; that being said, this is going to be a problem for every politician you try to sell us on as a savior. Because everyone of them, and many of their supporters, refuses to actually confront what the police are doing.

Yes, this applies to so much right now. We'd get so much farther if the elaborate excuses got ditched and went with "they're just evil and dedicated to doing evil things."

Good people need to start outing their ICE family members, neighbors, and community members.

They need to be made into pariahs in the places decent Americans gather.

Reminder that this state and local police involvement is explicitly illegal in very plain terms under 5 ILCS 805/15, but @govpritzker.illinois.gov doesn't care beyond soundbites and IL Attorney General Kwame Raoul holds an incorrect interpretation of the law.

like in previous days, a large contingent of state troopers, cook county sheriff’s police, and assorted local cops are guarding the ice detention center and keeping the streets clear for ice.

lots of protesters heckling them. a group is chanting, “they grab them! they grab us!”

The most famous piece of Soviet cinema, Battleship Potemkin, depicts the the major instigating flash point of the 1905 Revolution when navy sailors on the eponymous battleship mutinied over maggots in their rotten food. This fact is disconnected from the RT below bsky.app/profile/aphc...
