I'm going to do a history exploration of shmups, like I did with fighting games a few years ago.

I will play all shmups, beginning with the ones in arcades, starting from... 1962. It will allow me to see trends and some influences, and determine once and for all which is "the first shmup to do X".

Time Pilot 84 (Konami, jun 84)

A near-identical follow-up where you have missiles in addition to the regular fire, making it a bit more complex. It's kind of successful in the US (not at all in Japan), but I find it less fun because of the more generic "S-F" design.

The very first Capcom game: a basic vertical shooter with two shots, and a rank system that you can drop down with various powerups. It was slightly popular back then, but today I think it's too basic.
