iirc MD does, NES didn't at first but now does, N64 doesn't, GB does, GBA doesn't
allcityslopshop.com
...so, if they did go under or were otherwise forced to divest, who knows where some of that stuff might end up
allcityslopshop.com
one reason you should absolutely not want that to happen is that D4E/EGG (which evolved out of Bothtec) straight up owns the catalogues of a couple dozen significant Japanese computer devs—culturally important stuff, not Pxko-tier trash—and their consolidation has helped keep them in circulation...

hard to say: before the last couple years, their reputation was stellar, and they continue to acquire & sign deals for all manner of releases with and from reputable companies, so I don't think this is enough to do them in, but if it snowballs, who knows...

So I guess it's time to buy everything egg before they get sued out of existence
allcityslopshop.com
all the other versions were delisted from EGG proper, too: not just PC88 Joukan but PC98 Joukan+Gekan & MSX Joukan+Gekan as well
allcityslopshop.com
well, aside from brazen theft, but I'm trying to shoot em some bail here
allcityslopshop.com
between this, the MEG-DOS stuff & other issues, I wonder if there's been some sort of mgmt/personnel shift at D4E that's genuinely unaware that they don't have perpetual, all-encompassing licenses for anything they might've once licensed for PC, bc I don't know how else to explain these blunders
allcityslopshop.com
ahh just caught that myself... what's odd is I remember them being happy about it at first, so I wonder if it even took them a minute to realise they hadn't authorised it
allcityslopshop.com
the plot thickens: Iijima's chimed in to say that D4E didn't so much as ask before releasing the EGG Console version & has been unresponsive so, after ~1yr of requests from Mebius to let them resolve the issue to no avail, they went straight to Althi to get the EGG version pulled 🇯🇵
allcityslopshop.com
ofc ppl also wonder if EGG might've screwed up somewhere, given recent events... whatever the case, don't expect the PC98 versions anytime soon, I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
allcityslopshop.com
...I don't think anyone buying Burai in 2025 is suffering from version paralysis, and the reaction so far has been "why can't they coexist?"

Mebius is posting a physical two-pack with both MSX2 parts, so I presume they &/or IIjima pushed to clear the deck in favour of their own versions
allcityslopshop.com
I would say it's /mildly/ confusing, inasmuch as Mebius came behind EGG's PC88 release many months later with a version of the game that many (but not IIjima, perhaps) consider inferior, reissued at a substantially higher price, and bc the second half of the game never made it to PC88, but...

Riverhillsoft catalogue owners Althi have apologised to players & original creator Takeo Iijima for the "confusion" caused by there being two reissues of Burai Joukan on the market (EGG Console's PC88 reissue & Mebius' MSX2 reissue) and have pulled the EGG version in favour of Mebius' reissue
allcityslopshop.com
tbf the first ~yr or so of the initiative probably got about that much attention, which is why they switched from "¥500 games every week" to "variable-priced games at whatever pace is most sensible", with a focus on mobile tie-ins to big console games &/or episodic ADVs (some of which do super well)
allcityslopshop.com
well it's unlisted and I grabbed it off a press release that only went out within the last hour

this week's G-MODE Archives title: the technically ambitious STG, Gekidan Musume Akane & Aoi www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxDa... G-MODE announced this a while back, with one caveat: they couldn't identify Akane's VA, & asked the public for help identifying them so that they could clear the voice samples

oh and the initial release of this comp was paired with an interview from a bunch of former Telenet devs that was ostensibly about the games but mostly them dishing on precisely why so many of the broader Telenet family's games were so shoddy (insane dev times/resources, indifferent mgmt, etc etc)
allcityslopshop.com
icymi, the included games: Avenger (PC Engine CD), Gaiares (Mega Drive), Granada (Mega Drive), Psychic Storm (PC Engine CD)

say what you will about these particular games but Japan just got a second Telenet STG collection on Switch that makes this one look like a DDP comp

also, props to not defaulting to patreon for subscriptions—if you're targeting a niche & want to keep prices down (& you should, esp. given how sub-heavy the world is rn), we gotta at least try to start ducking some of these increasingly troublesome intermediaries www.designroom.site/about/#/port...

I don't think I'm speaking out of school when I say features like that one, as well as all those pxlygxn-era oral histories you might remember, are the summation of years of work, so signing up would not only hasten more published pieces but also allow the author to like, think about something else

For the Shadow of the Colossus story, we interviewed 14 people including project leads Fumito Ueda and Kenji Kaido, hired Gravity Rush concept artist Takeshi Oga to illustrate the cover, and put together a 10,000-word story with help from @milkman.bsky.social @shmuplations.bsky.social and others.

NeverAwake's one of the more thoughtful attempts to bridge modern design with classic STG, by someone who's actually played one in the last 30yrs (rarer than you'd hope...); you can read some of the dev & design process here web.archive.org/web/20250107...

NeverAwake FLASHBACK, the single-session expansion to Neotro's nightmarish twin-stick STG NeverAwake, has been dated for December 10 on PC, and there's a demo up atm store.steampowered.com/app/3072510/... this was originally planned as DLC but, for various reasons, was spun off into a separate game
NeverAwake FLASHBACK on Steam
A twin-stick shooter is based on the nightmare world of “NeverAwake” and has been reborn as a roguelite shooter!

I'll be very surprised if they make it beyond Aretha reissues, but we'll see
allcityslopshop.com
the Aretha series started on GB & migrated to SFC; I've only played the GB ones & my impression was that they were beneficiaries of being early RPGs on GB, but they certainly had their fans

the OG creator was at the 35th event: his studio's still active & he's still a frontline dev, apparently
