Metcalfe and Itzhak Rasooly† February 12, 2022 Abstract It is often argued that many White Americans oppose redistributive welfare policies because of animosity toward Black Americans. While a host of observational studies lend credence to this view, it has not yet been rigorously tested using the tools of randomized inference. In this study, we do exactly this by conducting two incentive-compatible experiments (n = 9, 775) in which different participants are randomly given different information about the share of welfare recipients who identify as Black and White. Our empirical analysis yields four main findings. First, most respondents greatly overestimate the share of welfare recipients who are Black. Second, these exaggerated beliefs reduce support for welfare among White respondents, a causal claim that we establish using treatment assignment as an instrument for beliefs. Third, just making White participants think about the racial composition of welfare recipients––holding constant their actual beliefs––reduces their support for welfare. Fourth, providing accurate information about the racial composition of welfare recipients does not influence support for welfare (relative to not receiving any information).

The US, in turn, then proposed building residential blocs in Rafah for up to 1M people, & the Gulf opposes this.

My take on the housing ballot propositions follows below. But first, on #6, which would change the timing of City-level elections...and help elect establishment candidates like Andrew Cuomo.

I'm AGAINST Proposal 6, which would move municipal elections to align with federal election years. It's hard work to engage voters about new ideas for our city even when elections for mayor & city council are the main thing on the ballot. If municipal voting happens at the same time as federal & state races, it'll be much harder: those who vote will spend less of their time thinking about City-level races, since federal & state will capture the lion's share of public attention. It'd be more difficult for groups like WFP, DSA, JFREJ, DRUM, CAAAV & others to organize for City-level races, since their volunteer power would be split between municipal & other races.

Result: name recognition and ad spending would be even bigger factors in City elections than they are today. If we'd had federally aligned election dates with this year's mayoral candidates, our odds of ending up with Mayor Andrew Cuomo would have been much higher! So l'm voting No on Proposal 6.

Vote NO on ballot prop 6 in NYC because having municipal elections on off years is like having crops bloom at different times of the year to keep the bees alive. The bees here are campaign volunteers, small dollar donations from working folks, news coverage, voter attention spans etc. #NYCvotes

The only heavy equipment allowed into Gaza is restricted to retrieving Israeli corpses. Bare hands are used to find the Palestinian dead. There is a default sympathy for Israelis demanding the return of the dead but the painfully wrong dehumanization and starvation of living Palestinians continues.
