Currently on a flight to Japan watching a Pentagon Assistant Press Secretary (Riley Podleski) work on a document in the open on her laptop. She spent the last hour copy and pasting headlines from articles critical of the Administration’s hostility toward the 1st amendment.

Finally got around to reading The Understudy, and it is so much fun. I needed an opera-world pulp thriller in my life.
morganrichter.bsky.social
My thriller THE UNDERSTUDY (August 5th, Knopf) is available for pre-order (hardcover, ebook, audio). Dark, pulpy, deadly All About Eve-style (or perhaps Showgirls-style) shenanigans during rehearsals for an opera based on Barbarella. Malevolent good fun. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/731133...
The dramatic cover of THE UNDERSTUDY by Morgan Richter, which features a sinister woman peeking out from behind a curtain, along with text of the opening line: "The first time my understudy tried to kill me was on the day we met." Text also reads, "Coming in August. Pre-order now wherever books are sold."

I just realized it's pub day for @stefanfatsis.bsky.social and "Unabridged"! I loved this book. It's FILLED with fascinating stories about defining, Merriam-Webster, and dictionaries in general.

I'm sorry that it's already time to think about this, but it would make a wonderful holiday gift. 🎁

Happy pub day to me!

But whenever I've seen folks getting arrested in NYC, it's at an action where certain people have PLANNED to block traffic or the entrance to a building or do something else that will likely provoke arrests. I haven't personally seen folks arrested at a typical march or rally like a #NoKings rally.

“This heckin’ pupperino fucking hates La Migra,” to paraphrase from @weratedogs.com

This is Chop. He was shot and killed by masked assailants in plain clothes who go by ICE. They showed up at his door "looking for migrants after receiving a tip." The son of the family asked if they could wait before entering the home while he put Chop away in the bathroom, as the dog can be aggressive with strangers.
According to the family, it is at this point that the son went to his pickup truck to retrieve his ID and a Border Patrol agent entered the home, opened the bathroom door, and shot Chop. None of the agents helped the family, who desperately tried to render aid to Chop, as he bled to death on the kitchen floor. Unsurprisingly, the agent who shot their dog then hid from them and refused to give his name. Even more unsurprising, they did not find any evidence of the migrants they were there to terrorize in the first place.
Do not open your door for these fucking losers. Rest easy Chop

Eight years ago, I drove to Sag Harbor and sat down for tea with Maria Matthiessen, telling her I wanted to write a book about her late husband, Peter. She warned me against it: a Sisyphean task! I pushed on anyway. (Maria was right.) And today, miraculously, is publication day for TRUE NATURE.

State murder charges wouldn't be straightforward--you'd have to litigate whether defendants were doing a federal job; there's a whole doctrine about this that I don't know well--but they also wouldn't be pardonable by the president.
caitesq.bsky.social
Another thing about murder is that every state has laws against it. You'd have to look at how each state handles criminal jurisdiction for acts outside the state, but it's plausible that federal officials could be prosecuted by a state where they planned or prepared for these killings.

The inherent corollary of "this is murder" is that we prosecute and punish people who commit murder.

Trump just bombed six more people in the Caribbean, for a total of 27 civilians who have been killed so far by the US military. It’s illegal for the military to target civilians who do not pose an immediate threat. This is murder.
