With Alberta students not in class, future teachers are left in limbo. Roberts was to begin a nine-week practicum the day teachers walked off the job. In her program, they need 10 weeks of practical experience in order to graduate. Many questions, excellent reporting from @journosousa.bsky.social

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

“We may be witnessing the emergence of a population-level acquired immune deficiency — not sexually transmitted, but airborne.”

That line isn’t from a tweet. It’s from a peer-reviewed paper in AJPM Focus (2025).

"We are not being unreasonable to expect freedom from infection with a pathogen that will certainly further disable us when we step into a public space. We are not being unreasonable when we expect solidarity from nominally progressive people."
So, the only tool we have to prevent the spread of COVID- to avoid infecting and sickening other people- is consistent masking. Which is frustrating. You could even call it unreasonable.

You could call the situation unreasonable. You could call the situation our government has put us in unreasonable. You could direct your frustration over said unreasonable, untenable situation upward, where it belongs: at the government, not downward, at struggling sick people, who have no choice but to engage with COVID safety practices including masking.

An excellent thread, after a soul crushing day on this site.

even the smartest folks whose takes i otherwise appreciate, who otherwise want to resist fascism themselves & encourage others to, find wearing a mask in, at least, public indoor spaces—to prevent the harms of this administration from impacting others—to be a bridge too far; it’s shameful, frankly.
jamellebouie.net
yeah, i think a commitment to public health obligates you to get vaccinated and, when you are sick, do what you can to avoid spreading that to other people. the demand that one mask at all times in public spaces is, i think, unreasonable.

“Able-bodied” may sound like a medical determination, but, as disability activist @imanibarbarin.bsky.social says, it’s really just a vague way “to signal this idea that disability can be seen.”

one of my takeaways from this great piece is that weiss just doesn’t…sound like an intelligent person? or at least, not someone who has thought even a little bit about how and why they think the things that they do. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gieT...

It’s really disheartening to see people who admit this regime is doing eugenics fail to understand the ways in which chronically ill, disabled, and immunocompromised people are just absolutely fucked by Long Covid

Tim Curry was a 20-something stage actor living in London in the seedy, sex-drenched 1970s when he auditioned for a new B-movie musical called “The Rocky Horror Show.” In a new interview, Curry discusses the cult classic, David Bowie, Studio 54, and more. http://nyer.cm/Z9RkgrI

This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.
A photograph from the 1988 ACT UP demonstration outside the FDA. Many people are participating in a die-in on the front steps, holding mock tombstones with messages like "RIP - killed by the FDA" and "Dead from lack of drugs." A line of police officers (some with classic 80s mustaches) wearing riot helmets stands between them and the building; one cop wearing white gloves is walking through the demonstrators. Affixed to the 2nd story windows of the building is a series of posters and a large blank banner reading Silence = Death.

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

Denial of Long Covid is rooted in denial of Covid-19 itself.

#COVID19 #LongCovid

A kind reminder that a strong, collective, grassroots #LongCovid movement would be an existential threat to those who pushed mass infection dynamics. Hence, the attacks on the name itself, the concept, the links between the disease and a pandemic driven by a SARS virus

If you wanted to script a scenario to perfectly vindicate the work of Jean Baudrillard, it would be Trump II.

A simulacra of a president running a simulation of a presidency, based on simulacra of news broadcast by simulations of news media.

Baudrillard is to Trump II what Foucault was to GWB.

My mom sometimes tries to guilt me into talking to them—because what else is a very Catholic mom of 6 going to do?—but other than those conversations, it is, indeed, very freeing.

Virginia State Senate Dems just brought down fire and fury regarding the “Compact,” notifying the President and Rector that UVA would lose ALL STATE APPROPRIATIONS if it signs and cedes the University to “federal political control.” Notably, their letter directly restates points made here by @siva.

The “compact” for higher ed is an unserious document written by unserious people from a position of spectacular ignorance. No one should take it seriously. Sadly, my bosses are taking it seriously.

My now ex husband has been an Atlantic subscriber for decades. The way I have hated Flanagan since the very first time I read one of her pieces can’t be expressed in words. I am so happy to be in a house that doesn’t receive that magazine anymore.

I mean, if you can honestly watch videos of the unicorn dance party protests in Portland and still be worried you don’t know how to act collectively, that is a failure of your own imagination.

This made me spit my coffee. Which I suppose is the best way to learn of such horrifying news.
