Both fantastic shows that I will miss! Thank you (and the rest of the teams) for your work.

My hot take is that none of these are structure. These are all recipes that describe structure.

Structure is the Salt, Fat, Acid Heat of writing.

3-Act/Hero's Journey etc are recipes.

You can make great meals without using a recipe if you understand the principles of structure.

So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?

Nothing stops you returning to an online game like a falling-out in a friend group that played it together. Heartbreaking.

Multiple post-show audience Q&As I've been involved in have seen somebody asking some variant of "do you stay in character outside the show" and let me tell you it is so very satisfying to put that concept firmly to bed

Method acting, also known less formally in theater circles as “being an absolutely insufferable prick.”

Finding out that Jared Leto kept doing his method acting shit and insisted on staying in character on the set of Tron Ares and would only answer to the name of Ares is so funny, like making a big ass douche of yourself for the third Tron movie where you play “computer program that gains feelings”

Its wild too because apparently Tron Ares was a different story/film initially but Leto wanted to explore his character so much he convinced the director to change it to focus on him.
“The first iteration of [Tron: Ares] was a different movie, but it had a character named Ares that [Leto] was cast as while we were in pre-production,” Wigutow says, “He really got his teeth into this character and really wanted to hold onto it, and ultimately came to me and said, ‘Let's just build a movie around this character. I want to understand this character, his origins, and I want to take him to a very different place.’ So that's really the provenance and the origin of this specific film is Jared's dogged persistence on getting it done, but also telling the story of this character specifically.”

In honor of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand

I'll go first: Six page commercial lease.

Oh and a letter after the date if there are multiple revisions on that day

I use "project title, document type, YYYYMMDD" plus initials of author at the end if working on a collaborative project.

So for example "Spectrum screenplay 20250915 AT".

Genuinely believe that's the best way to name files based on my experience.

*Always* year month day
barrsteve.bsky.social
Screenwriters, what are your file naming conventions?

Depending on the needs of the production, I usually bounce between version numbers (v1, v2.5, v3.2.4.111, etc) or dates (Cheers ep706 060925).

What I never ever ever write is "final".
For three reasons.

(a short thread)
#scriptsky #filmsky
Mostly text as an image. The title says "Every Designer In This World" and then there are six file icons, with names suggesting that each was supposed to be the "final" version but then there were more changes.

Weirdly also one of the best soulslikes? Same psychological feeling, except the combat is walking, the bosses are tricky climbs, and the souls are your pride. (Not an unfair or even unintended comparison either imo, given the world design and the bonfire checkpoints)

BABY STEPS is a top 10 game for me, I think. It's so funny and so well-designed and so thematically rich, at once beautiful and troll-like. Bennett Foddy's thoughtful design and sick sense of humour writ large as the greatest damn walking simulator ever.

GenAI truly was the worst technology to come along at this moment.

An energy and water guzzler when we most urgently need to take climate action.

A disinformation machine as our journalism fails.

A bias machine as fascism takes root.

A job killer in a cost of living crisis.

Rewatched Birth. Love that movie. Here’s how you know it’s good: it’s in the strike zone of IMDB/Rotten Tomatoes for a good movie.
The Google result for Birth showing a 6.3 imdb and a 40% rotten tomato ranking

Up there with the Brass Eye special for sure - but goofing on a new era of hyperdramatic documentary. Weirdly it kinda picks up where AMERICAN VANDAL left off too, stylistically at least. I laughed!

Today, we go into tech on Hansol Jung's WOLF PLAY. What a delight it's been rehearsing this beautiful, hilarious, moving little play, and what a nightmare* it's about to be coordinating hundreds of lighting and sound cues, prop choreography, running water, and more. Theatre!
