If Labour don’t reform the Energy Profits Levy then even more jobs will go.

They must listen to industry, the unions and workers and do the right thing.

Indeed.

The government has chosen to prioritise reducing (skilled, legal, for work) migration over growth and hence over improving public services.

No economic rationale - but even worse, no political rationale either.

One mistake Labour made in their first year is loading quite a few new costs onto business all at once. They are risking doing something similar on immigration, I think.

"Trump is a field day for Palantir, OpenAI, xAI, Anduril & others. He may think he's the ultimate peacemaker. But his actions are stoking China’s self-belief and elevating America’s military-AI complex. It would be rash to assume he knows what he is doing." My column. www.ft.com/content/7343...

P.S. I’ve been on a DSIT working group about this for a number of years, and we told them this from the start. The ‘Trust Framework’ in the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 was built from this, and directly opposite to the way the government is now selling it.

I’m seeing pieces and posts today about how useful digital ID could be in navigating bureaucracy etc. Yes. It would. That, however, is *not* how the government tried to sell it to us. Instead, they portrayed it as a tool to stop illegal working and curb illegal immigration. 1/4

Everyone agrees that we're currently in a dotcom era-like AI bubble. People disagree what sort of bubble it is.

There are 3 stories one can tell about the dotcom crash: a startup story, a telecom story, and an accounting fraud story.

My take: it's giving Enron

Terrific piece this. Continue to find it bizarre how little “food inflation is off the chain” and “core inflation is above target” featured as topics at Labour conference or more broadly as “theories to why the government is unpopular”.

“I think politicians are ignoring prices and bills and hoping we’ll forget about them and find something else to complain about…”

My report on how the flighty Westminster bubble forgot about the cost-of-living crisis, which certainly isn't over:
Energy bills rise while Westminster talks immigration
Why have our politicians forgotten about the cost-of-living crisis?

This tweet has been doing the rounds on Twitter now that Nathan Gill has pleaded guilty.

If only someone had tried to investigate UKIP & Russian interference 🧐

There’s another timeline where the Guardian supported me, doubled down on the investigation & I look 5 years younger ..

Something that's gone under the radar ahead of the 2026 Holyrood elections is the % of voters who are undecided, & who they are.

Around an eighth of likely voters don't know who they'd vote for. Over half of those voted SNP in 2021. If they go back to the SNP, a majority isn't off the cards.

We are reaching the point at which Trumpian tariffs become effective embargoes on trade. I’m sure American farmers will appreciate the higher costs and lack of choice that their orange tyrant is forcing on them.
