$1 billion over 13 years to attract high profile international research Chairs, I get.

$120 million over 12 years to hire international assistant profs? Bit of a slap across the face of Canadian PhD programs.

A clear demonstration of the power of framing. If you only saw this headline you probably would have a knee jerk aversion to Prop 50. Context matters. In a world where we know people aren't clicking past the notification we need to find ways to contextualize better.
Okay yeah he voted Cuomo
Q: It's election day in NYC. Did you vote for Mamdani or Cuomo?

Schumer: "Look, I voted, and I look forward to working with the next mayor to help NYC."
I know it probably won't happen, but considering how the rights it cover are needed to exercise/experience the rights it doesn't cover I have a small hope the Supreme Court will find some way to keep our liberal democracy alive.
The notwithstanding clause is the stupidest thing ever. No oversight on its use and it covers so fucking much

It's disgusting how much Canadian provincial premiers are frothing because the feds aren't using the notwithstanding clause.

Once you use it — even on something as obviously morally intolerable as child pornography — you open the floodgates for human rights abuses.

BREAKING: After ICE refuses to allow detained migrants to receive the Eucharist, Pope Leo calls on Trump and Vance to respect migrants‘ dignity and religious liberty.

“They must allow ministers to assist with their needs. They've been separated from their families and no one knows what happens.”

In a way, I find the authoritarian takeover of our media system even more disturbing than the authoritarian takeover of our political system.

Our political system has been failing basically my entire adult life. But, the media system provided accountability and sort of worked. Now it’s collapsing.
Yeah transparency is what's needed. Have clear rules on what is and isn't accepted and keep them at that. Don't change constantly on the whims of a few bureaucrats who know nothing
YOU DON'T WANT IT AT 0, but people can't comprehend that
And also that's the thing people don't understand about vacancy rates, people think it means that x% of houses sit empty, but it's house empty at any given time. So like when a tenant move out, the time it takes before a new one go in.
Since Q is a boomer who doesn't understand technology I have done you all the favor of posting this insane footage

the tea leaves are not easy to read here, but musk has a better chance of losing these shareholders votes than ever before... fact that the impossible scenario where he is rejected by his own shareholders looks possible is a sign of seismic change

i think some of this is straight up campaign spend to look more viable
A thing you're not seeing if you haven't checked Twitter in the last week is all the political betting markets (Polymarket, Kalshi) are actively caping for Cuomo and spreading Zohran conspiracies on there. Usually this would be a cause for some sort of regulatory oversight but that no longer exists.

one good example of this was pretty recently when Ezra Klein adopted right wing criticism of a key broadband infrastructure program without pretty clearly not doing any original research into what he was complaining about

That dislike is mainly social and identity-based, has little or nothing to do with policy, & tracks global political patterns of increased political tension between urban & rural places.

So it's a big thing. But it's worth recalling how very close the 2024 election was despite all the headwinds.

The actually existing Democratic Party supports popular policies, right down the list. The real story is that it narrowly lost a presidential election in 2024 & faces structural challenges due to the bias in the US electoral system that empowers small rural minorities who increasingly dislike it.

If Democrats were the party Republicans say they are, then, yeah, that party would really need to take a long look in the mirror. But it's not.

What's happening is that these commentators adopt Republican talking points about the Democratic agenda. That's it, that's the whole story. Their source of information about Democrats and Democratic priorities is Republicans and Republican-aligned media
👇🎯

These candidates actually existed.

The Democratic Party actually had a platform. Ezra Douthglesias could still go read it. They choose not to, or to pretend it didn't exist: www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/20....

can I say something without anyone getting mad?

I think there is too much of a focus with modern space hardware in making it look cool
NEW: Intuitive Machines, Astrolab, and Lunar Outpost have all built seriously cool, super-futuristic moon rovers. They’re competing to become the official mode of transportation for NASA’s Artemis astronauts.

And for NatGeo, I test drove all three. www.nationalgeographic.com/science/arti...
An inside look into NASA's next generation moon rovers
A retro-futuristic space truck. A nimble crustacean on wheels. A space-age dune buggy. One will win a multibillion-dollar prize to deploy on a future NASA Artemis mission. But first, we took a ride on...

Really, the thing about this like most things is that we need more transparency.

The laws surrounding gun ownership are convoluted and have a bunch of exceptions for no reason at all.

If it were clearer I think people would have less of a problem.
smart gun regulations basically killed smart guns in their infancy. gun policy in general tends to be knee-jerk like online "safety" policy in Congress
Yeah i think thats kind of similar to our problems but worse. Here a lot of it is that they have extremely weird definitions, banned a bunch of historic rifles and stuff.

kind of bureaucratic interventions without thinking of how it actually works for owners

A more pertinent question: Why might one mayor in one city be a political liability for national Democrats, while the president, VP, various governors, and members of Congress are not for the national Republicans, let alone any GOP mayor?

How did that come to be? Who makes that happen?
