yep, and in both family and work cases it seems OTT to make the full B2 the default for ILR. many jobs simply won't/don't need it, and with them making noises to make the B2 the default for family routes too it all seems very silly
jjjcameron.bsky.social
Probably because the level of English in Sweden is much higher than the equivalent education stage in the UK for any foreign language. So, UK A-level French is B2, whereas final-year English in Sweden is C1.
jjjcameron.bsky.social
It does not mean an A-level in English. It's the equivalent to an A-level proficiency in a foreign language (which is not fluency!).
jjjcameron.bsky.social
This means B2 within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

I would say that it would be pretty much impossible to work in the UK without B2 English anyway for jobs that require daily professional interactions.

Trump should have just kept going until Rubio said, "10,000 years. The most important day for 10,000 years."
atrupar.com
MARCO RUBIO: This is probably one of the most important days for world peace in 50 years. That's not an exaggeration

TRUMP: Only 50?

RUBIO: Maybe 100

Vance is having an incredible morning on the Sunday shows doing "oh so now it's illegal to [mundane thing]?"

A real quote when Vance is asked about whether Tom Homan kept the $50,000 he got in a fast food bag: "Is it illegal to take a payment for doing services?"

Maduro & Machado seem to be engaged in a bidding war for the Trump admin's support with US companies' access to Venezuela's mineral wealth as the bargaining chip.

Will this lead to a "just and peaceful transition... to democracy" for the people of Venezuela?

www.nytimes.com/2025/10/10/w...
Venezuelan officials, hoping to end their country’s clash with the United States, offered the Trump administration a dominant stake in Venezuela’s oil and other mineral wealth in discussions that lasted for months, according to multiple people close to the talks. Under a deal discussed between a senior U.S. official and Mr. Maduro’s top aides, the Venezuelan strongman offered to open up all existing and future oil and gold projects to American companies, give preferential contracts to American businesses, reverse the flow of Venezuelan oil exports from China to the United States, and slash his country’s energy and mining contracts with Chinese, Iranian and Russian firms. As Mr. Grenell and Mr. Maduro’s envoys negotiated a deal, the leader of Venezuela’s main opposition movement, María Corina Machado, pitched her own economic proposal in New York. She argued that even greater economic wealth — $1.7 trillion in 15 years — awaited U.S. companies in Venezuela if her movement launched a political transition. (Ms. Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for what the Norwegian Nobel Committee described as “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela.”)

“I don’t think the reality of what drones mean on the battlefield has really sunk in for the U.S. Army,” said Lt. Gen. Barno, a former commander in Afghanistan. “We certainly haven’t encountered the psychological impact of having a machine looking at you all the time that’s devoted to killing you”

Trump's view on NATO seems a bit like pre-1914 Britain's attitude to France: "Yes we can cooperate in peacetime, but in a crisis maybe we will help you, maybe we won't."

Which didn't work out too well from a deterrence standpoint in the end.

What I find most telling is that Trump said to Stubb: „Maybe you should throw 'em out of NATO frankly.“ He says YOU, not WE. And that is not a coincidence. Trumps talks about NATO as a third party all the time. www.reuters.com/business/aer...

If I were on the Norwegian Nobel Committee, I would lean heavily on the fact that this year's prize is for achievements up to 2024, and so Trump isn't eligible. Obviously, that just postpones the problem for a year, but that's a long time for DJT's attention span.

We should/do teach students how to engage critically with the historiography and place their argument within it. This is an important skill that requires close reading of the text. They cannot do that reliably with an AI summary.
